Corrosion of Conformity were pioneers of the Punk Metal genre in the 1980's, however, they eventually gravitated towards a more straight-forward Heavy Metal sound. By the mid-1990s they had become a Heavy Metal band. This led to more mainstream acceptance, gained particularly through their big break, opening for Metallica. In recent years, COC now exhibit a sound which leans towards stoner rock though still keeping their southern metal sound.
