An IP rating is a two- or three digit number, stating the ingress protection level of electrical equipment.

The first number refers to protection against solid objects (fingers, tools etc.) It can range from 0 = no protection, to 6 = total protection.

The second number refers to protection against liquids, again, 0 = no protection, and 8 = protection against immersion under pressure.

The third, optional, digit represents protection against mechanical impact damage. 0 = no protection, while 9 = protection against 20 joule impact (5 Kg at 40 cm).
