It is usually distinct from manual labour, employing as it does the higher centres of abstract thought of the brain/mind system, rather than the evolutionarily earlier sensori-motor system involved in digging, brick-laying, assembly line work etc.
Academic work might also be contrasted with practical considerations. For example, a computer program written for academic reasons is considered by some to be much easier than writing a similar program for mass market retail use. The issues of future updates of the software, technical support considerations, training users, etc. generally have a significant effect on the structure of the program.
