(A 1997 self-titled release covered multiple mainstream genres.) Their music is commonly used to provide atmosphere in Halloween haunted houses.
In 1998, Joseph Vargo brought Midnight Syndicate into the public eye with his movie soundtrack concept for a subtle yet powerful gothic horror album that would put to shame the Halloween sound effects of yesteryear. Aside from contributing the gothic artwork and ominous vocals, Vargo stepped in as the executive producer and new creative director of the band. Vargo lent his musical influence and trademark title Born of the Night, to their breakthrough release, as well as the 1999 follow-up Realm of Shadows. Riding on Vargo's popularity in the gothic subculture and his success in the market, Midnight Syndicate titled every song after each of Vargo's popular paintings in an effort to establish a rapport with his gothic and Halloween audiences, and the music soon became a favorite of haunters.
Thereafter, the line-up parted ways to explore separate projects. Joseph Vargo wrote and published a vampire novel entitled Tales from the Dark Tower and a set of Gothic Tarot cards. Band members Ed Douglas and Gavin Goszka released two other cds in keeping with their mentor's concepts of an orchestrated musical style, though shedding the idea of giving their audience a "story" to follow and focusing more on having the listener "create" their own story to accompany the music.
In 2003, Ed Douglas and Gavin Goszka made a diversion from the horror music genre to pursue the computer gaming market with their Dungeons & Dragons cd, while Joseph Vargo continued his original concepts with his new band Nox Arcana and their 2003 debut release Darklore Manor.
