They are independent of local government that normally organizes education in the UK. The former labour prime minister, Tony Blair, established academies in 2000. The introduction of academy schools is seen by some as contraversial.
Typically, academy schools have some sort of specialism, depending on the interests of the provider of the private funding. For example, the Langley Academy has a special interest in museum-related education and sports, especially cricket and rowing.
