Rick Perry (b. March 4, 1950) is a Republican politician and the current Governor of Texas.
He assumed office in December of 2000 when then-Governor George W. Bush resigned to become President of the United States, and was reelected in 2002 over Democrat Tony Sanchez.
Prior to becoming Governor, Perry served as Lieutenant Governor from 1998-2000; the Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture from 1990-1998 (an elected constitutional office in Texas); and in the Texas House of Representatives from 1984-1990.
