Uttaran is daily serial broadcast on the Indian Channel Colors. It replaced Big Boss 2 & went on air on December 1 , 2008 in the 10.00pm slot while Jaane Kya Baat Hui went on air in the 10.30pm slot. Within the first month it has been able to retain a position in Top 20 programmes in India.

Uttaran is all about a kid named Ichchha (meaning wish) who is the daughter of a maidservant in the city of Mumbai. Damini, her mother, quits her job in a household and rushes to the house of Jogi Thakur for the job of governing their only daughter, Tapasya. Divya, the Thakur's wife, agrees to Damini governing Tapasya under the condition that no relative of hers enters the "haveli" (meaning palace, or mansion). Things take a turn when Ichchha befriends Tapasya and sleeps in her room and is discovered by Divya in her room. Damini almost loses her job but Tapasya's friendship with Ichchha saves them. It seems that Tapasya has always craved for a friend.
The story goes on a normal track until Damini discovers that Rajendra, her husband, was accidentally killed by Jogi Thakur. Pushkar, Divya's notorious brother, feeds her cock-and-bull stories about how Jogi reacted to his death. Then, she enters the haveli and quits her job and as she leaves, Divya falls down the stairs and falls unconscious. Damini rushes her to the hospital, only to learn that Divya should be immediately operated upon. When the operation is done, the doctor says that Divya's legs will have no movement. In Divya's absence, Damini takes care of Tapasya like her mother.
The Thakur and Thakurayan allot Damini a room in their mansion and take her permission to make Ichchha study in the same school as Tapasya. Ichchha is admitted into Tapasya's school. Tapasya gets jealous that her parents are now looking after Ichchha instead of her only, and she tries to get her out of the haveli, but after a talk with her parents, she apologizes to Ichchha. However, one night Ichcha has difficulty in sleeping as her mother has gone somewhere hence Yogi Thakur bring her to sleep with Thakurayan. Tapasya finds out about this in the morning and becomes furious and just like before start conspiring to get Ichcha out of the haveli. During a school trip to the nearby zoo, she deliberately leaves Ichcha behind and returns home alone. Ichcha roams in the zoo all alone at night and gets scared.She goes to the forest in search of her school mates and collapses due to several falls,dehydration and fright.Thakur finds Iccha with the help of a security man and brings her home at around 6 am.When Thakur asks her to narrate the incident she is breathless and starts crying.Tapasya is suspected by her dad and when questioned she lies but then tells the truth stating she wanted Ichcha to get lost forever.Thakur gets very upset after this.As he feels Tapasya has crossed the limits, he sends her to a boarding school so that she becomes independent and leans to share.It has also been announced that Uttaran will take a generation leap and Iccha and Tapasya will be seen as teens soon.
