Development
The show was created by Ari Schlossberg who also wrote the pilot script and developed by CBS for the 2008-2009 Television Season.
In March 2008 CBS ordered a 15 minute pilot presentation of the project. In May 2008 the show was retooled, with Jeffrey Bell coming onboard as showrunner and Jon Turteltaub as an executive producer. Schlossberg remained onboard as a co-executive producer along with Karim Zriek and Dan Shotz.
Bell subsequently rewrote the first episode which Jon Turteltaub would direct. During the retooling process six of the fifteen original castmembers from the pilot-presentation were replaced, including Ryan Merriman (Henry Dunn), Samantha Noble (Trish Wellington), Bill Dow (Sheriff Mills) and Bill Pullman (Uncle Marty). The roles of Thomas Wellington and Hunter Jennings were also recast.
Actors who remained with the show from pilot-presentation to the aired television pilot include Elaine Cassidy, Cameron Richardson, Adam Campbell, C.J. Thomason, Matt Barr, Cassandra Sawtell, Brandon Jay McLaren, Chris Gauthier and Sean Rogerson.
Plot
Main article: List of Harper's Island episodesThe television show is a horror thriller/mystery, described as Scream meets And Then There Were None
Friends and family come to Harper's Island for Henry Dunn and Trish Wellington's wedding. It is then when a serial killer kills the guests one by one. Only few will survive.
In addition to a web series based on the show, CBS's multimedia promotion includes a live online chat on a Fancast Forum each Friday with the "murder victim" from the Saturday night U.S. broadcast, where questions and comments from viewers trying to solve the mystery are encouraged, as well as providing a behind-the-scenes view from the series.

US Nielsen ratings
Despite falling ratings CBS will continue to air all Harper's Island episodes, although the show has been moved from its original night and time to Saturdays.
In Australia, Harper's Island ratings were extremely underwhelming, having being beaten by the Seven Network airing Castle, and the Nine Network airing CSI: Miami. and the show was moved from 9:30 pm on Sunday nights to 1:25 am Monday mornings. The Biggest Loser US replaced its timeslot. This was a surprise considering the hype of the show, with Channel Ten frequently airing sneak peaks and promotional teaser trailers. In Canada, the show continues to air on Thursday nights at 10 PM on GlobalTV.

And then she gets pulled into the story as it begins to unfold on the island."
