Students are usually 14-15 years old. It is usually the first year of high school and, in this case, a student at this level is called a high school freshman. However, in some school boards, grade 9 is the last year of junior high.
In the United States, in mathematics, ninth graders are usually taught either Algebra I or Geometry. Algebra II is also taught to those ninth graders who are prepared for it.
