Gampaha is the second main city in Sri Lanka. It is situated in the Western Province, north of Colombo. Gampaha is seperated from Colombo by mainly the Kalani river.

The word "Gampaha" is composed from "Gam", which means village and "paha", which means five. So the meaning is Five Villages. The five villages in the Gampaha city is Ihalagama, Pahalagama, Madagama, Aluthgama and Yagoda.
