Ironman & related articles - discussion

As part of this WikiProject's goal of improving Misplaced Pages's coverage of triathlon articles, I am hereby opening a discussion on the arrangement of articles relating to Ironman Triathlon.

The article Ironman Triathlon brings together many valid areas of encyclopaedic content, however perhaps they should be in separate articles. I propose:

The general idea is to follow how articles of championships in other sports are arranged – e.g. FINA World Aquatics Championships and 2007 World Aquatics Championships, or Triathlon at the Summer Olympics and Triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

I've started on an initial draft of 2008 Ironman World Championship.

Seems reasonable to me, I may need to think a bit more about the detail. Suggest you post a link to this discussion on the relevant article talk pages (I'd do it myself, but I need to get to bed now, and will be away for most of tomorrow). Note there is already an Ironman 70.3 article.

Proposals to nominate articles for deletion

Having made quick assessments of all the Triathlon articles recently tagged with the WikiProject Triathlon banner, I propose the following list of article is proposed for deletion, either by WP:PROD or WP:AfD. Please add your comments, and additions to the list below. Feel free to start the deletion process if you agree, otherwise I will start in the next week or so. Completed discussions

Thanks NSH for your input - maybe if I hadn't super-quick scan-read these articles then the list wouldn't have been so long! Yboy83 (talk) 14:51, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

That's OK, it doesn't hurt to have a convenient list of dubious articles. I'm still considering the remaining articles, which will probably take a few more days (too many to look at all at once). NSH001 (talk) 16:09, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:49, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Article alerts

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Misplaced Pages:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Misplaced Pages talk:Article alerts.

Sponsorship and advertising - esp. triathlete biographies and race names

Firstly, I've recently come across some bios with sections listing "Sponsors" and "Partners". Examples:

In my opinion, these sections should be removed. All pro triathletes have sponsors, often the same ones, and such lists add nothing to the articles. Just WP:ADVERTISING.

Secondly, do we want the sponsor's name included in race titles? I notice some of the races listed in 2008 Ironman World Championship include the sponsor's name, others don't. I'm pretty sure we don't want it in article titles (for example, we have London Marathon, and Flora London Marathon is just a redirect).

Maybe we should develop a guideline on how to present sponsorship? To my surprise, I couldn't find one already on Misplaced Pages (I didn't spend too much time looking, though).

I agree the "sponsors" and "partners" should be removed in general, with those particularly notable incorporated into prose text where appropriate. Lists of sponsors change from year to year, and knowing how little some of these articles are edited, such lists become out of date quite quickly.
As for race names - the race names I used in 2008 Ironman World Championship were those displayed on the IM webpages for each particular event - some events have sponsors with naming rights, others appear not to. For article names, I would think WP:NAME could be followed by using the "most easily recognized name", which in my opinion in these cases is without the sponsors name.
Some sort of guideline on all this would be great if we can find/write one, but perhaps this would be best at WP:SPORTS level as there are without doubt other sports with the same issues.

Athlete bios results sections

Following on from the above discussion about sponsors... the "results" sections of athlete biogs - is (e.g.) 17th place in an obscure/local event really notable? Should we consider limiting to top 3/5/10 positions and decide upon a list of events which are suitable for inclusion in these sections?

Also there are numerous table styles being used for such results. I'm going to start a template system to help with standardising the layout. Something like this with sample data from Chrissie's latest few results:

Template:Tri-bio-results-top Template:Tri-bio-result Template:Tri-bio-result Template:Tri-bio-result

|}

My initial thoughts were to allow split times like "Swim+T1" using colspans, but this would then break the sortablility. Obviously needs work before implementation. Yboy83 (talk) 10:42, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Are there enough articles on this subject to justify an Outline of triathlon?

Here's a discussion about subject development you might find interesting.
