He is the son of the legendary Telugu actor, Krishna. He started out his movie career as a child actor in his father's films before turning professional at the age of 22.
Known for his good looks, charisma, and polished acting and dancing skills, Mahesh has starred in some very successful movies such as Rajakumarudu, Murari, Okkadu and Athadu. Mahesh married Bollywood actress Namrata Shirodkar in Feburary 2005.
