The Best Breakout New York City Artist Award is a music award given out by MTV and Time Warner Cable in conjunction with the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

2009

In 2009 the award will be presented at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony to be held on September 13 in New York City at Radio City Music Hall. The ceremony will be hosted by Russell Brand.

Over 190 New York City bands were winnowed down to the top three by the summer of 2009.

Those three bands will compete for the "The Best Breakout New York City Artist Award" at an MTV Video Music Awards weekend competition and pre-party at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza on September 11, 2009. The competition will take place before MTV Video Music Awards performers, in between performances from MTV Video Music Awards artists including Fefe Dobson and Cobra Starship.

The battle will be between:

  1. The Shells, the all-female pop/folk/rock harmony trio (Jessi Rae Waltz, Carrie Welling, and Melanie Klaja);
  2. MeTalkPretty, a rock quartet; and
  3. Red Directors, a rock quartet.

The winning band will be revealed at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on the night of Sunday, September 13, 2009, and showcased nationally on MTV2.
