Jim Hawkins is a radio presenter for BBC Radio Shropshire. He has a mid-morning talkback program, but is renowned for his weekly BookCrossing updates between 11 and 12 AM on Fridays, which attract a global audience listening via the BBC's Internet "Listen Live" function.
Richard “Jim” Hawkins was born on 1st March 1962 in Essex. He was brought up in Warwickshire where he was educated at the prestigious Warwick School. This is where he acquired the nickname Jim, after the Treasure Island character, which seems to have stuck. After Warwick he attended the University of Warwick before joining Mercia Sound in Coventry. Jim’s journalistic career has taken him to Southern Sound Radio in Brighton, then BBC Radio Northampton and Century Radio in Gateshead, before finally moving to BBC Radio Shropshire. Jim has also worked for BBC Radio 4 and GLR.
Jim joined BBC Radio Shropshire to host the early-breakfast show. His talents were quickly recognised and he was moved to his present mid-morning show Monday to Friday from 9AM to 12PM, following Eric Smith’s breakfast show and preceding Colin Young, who is rumoured to be the inspiration for Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge. Jim frequently takes the helm of the breakfast show when Eric is away, particularly on Bank Holidays when he has been known to play radio Buckaroo! Jim also hosts the popular Sunday night rock show from 6PM to 8PM, ably assisted by Zappa the Penguin, who can always be seen on the webcam.
Jim is now a massively active BookCrosser, and an active member of the "BCUK" Yahoo! group. His other interests include current affairs, photography, playing guitar, collecting old radio and tape recorders, vintage film and TV comedy. Jim also has a well-known dislike of Marmite.
Since 2006, Jim Hawkins has consistently and regularly requested that the incorrect information on this entry be corrected or the entire page deleted. When the information is corrected by himself or others, it is subsequently removed and replaced with incorrect information, and the entry remains. There is no clear reason as to why those who remove the corrections and restore misleading and invalid data, and what benefit they believe the world would gain from presenting such mis-truths but I'm sure it makes sense to someone.
