2009
In 2009 the award was presented at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards held on September 13 in New York City at Radio City Music Hall. The ceremony was hosted by Russell Brand.
Over 190 New York City bands were winnowed down to the top three by the summer of 2009.
The battle was between:

- Red Directors, a rock quartet
- The Shells, an all-female trio
The three bands competed for the "Best Breakout New York City Artist Award" at an MTV Video Music Awards weekend competition and pre-party at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza on September 11, 2009. The competition took place before MTV Video Music Awards performers, in between performances from MTV Video Music Awards artists including Fefe Dobson and Cobra Starship.
MeTalkPretty was revealed as the winning band at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards the night of Sunday, September 13, 2009, and showcased nationally on MTV2.
