A past pupil of St. Columb's College in Derry, Ball presented the famous green Irish Olympian blazer he donned for the games to his former school as a gift. The blazer now rests inside an unlocked glass cabinet in the College. As a result, it is a common trait for passing poorly-behaved pupils to test their nerve and remove the blazer from the cabinet to try it on without being spotted by school authorites.
A local hero, Ball appears in a mural on Creggan's Central Drive. The annual Liam Ball International Triathlon, hosted by Templemore Sports Complex in Derry, is also named after Ball.
