Regular Show is an upcoming American animated television series created by J.G. Quintel (former creative director for The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack), based the short created out of Cartoon Network's Cartoonstitute project. The show has a laid-back style of humor, with a mundane event slowly becoming an awkward situation. It was greenlighted for 6 half-hours on August 13th, 2009 by Cartoon Network.
Plot
Two groundskeepers, best friends Mordecai (a blue jay) and Rigby (a raccoon) spend their days trying to entertain themselves by any means, to the anger of Benson (a gumball machine) and to Pops' (a lollipop-headed man) delight.
Animated Short
While having breakfast, Mordecai and Rigby talk about the lack of furniture with each of their rooms. During the discussion, Benson and Pops come through the kitchen lugging a small couch with them. Interested in obtaining the item, the duo rush out of the house to follow the older gentlemen. Upon discovering that they are going to throw away the couch, Mordecai and Rigby insist on checking it out. Benson leaves to take care of some other business while the boys admire the couch, both deciding that is a good piece of furniture. However, their judgement is reversed when they each decide to sit in the couch and realize that it is uncomfortable (the reason for throwing it out). Despite this, Mordecai and Rigby both want the chair for themselves and ask Pops for it. Unable to decide who to give it to, the lollipop-headed man leaves it for them to decide. After refusing to play "punishies" for it, Rigby suggests a game that will require more skill: rock, paper, scissors.
After the two begin playing (much to Pops' delight), Benson passes by and discovers what is going on. Repulsed, he describes rock, paper, scissors to be an evil game and leaves. After having tied multiple times, the two friends become disgruntled and Pops more fascinated by the game. Following a montage of Mordecai and Rigby's several attempts to break the tie, it is shown that a small crowd has formed and they have now tied ninety-nine times. Becoming fed up with the situation, they question each as to why they are fighting over the chair. Finding out that they were both lying about how comfy the chair was so the other wouldn't want it, they decide to end it, only for the 100th tie in-a-row to occur.
At that point, a booming voice states that since the game has been tied hundred times, he gets to eat the prize they were fighting for. An inter-dimensional rift then opens, sucking everything in the area. Everyone runs for cover, but upon seeing the chair also being sucked up, Rigby goes to save it (prompting Mordecai and Pops to follow). Benson and Sips (a large ape-like creature) hear Pops' cries for help over an intercom and see a large explosion in the distance, immediately coming to their rescue. By the time they reach them, Rigby, Mordecai and Pops are all hanging to each other for dear life, about to be eaten by a strange monster within the rift. After being told by Benson that they must break the tie in order to save everyone, the bird and raccoon do so. Once they are safe, Rigby is saddened by the loss of the chair, but he and Mordecai soon see that half of the chair had survived. But they are quickly told by Benson to clean the area up, who then leaves with everyone else. The cartoon ends abruptly, with Mordecai and Rigby playing rock, paper, scissors over who will drive the golf cart.
