Dhoom 2: Back In Action (Template:Lang-hi, Hindustani pronunciation: [dʱm], also abbreviated and known as D:2, D2 and D2: Back In Action) is a 2006 Indian action buddy cop film directed by Sanjay Gadhvi and produced by Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra at an estimated budget of Rs 350 million. It is the second of the films in the Dhoom series. Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra star in the film as Jai Dixit and Ali Akbar Fateh Khan as buddy cops. The duo attempt to nab Mr. A/Aryan (Hrithik Roshan), a professional thief whose passion is to steal rare and valuable collectibles using high-technology gadgets.
Both films of the Dhoom series caused Indian youths to ride their motorcycles rashly, thereby causing an increase in the number of road accidents in Mumbai, India. This prompted the city's police commissioner to appeal to the censor board to delete the fast-paced rash driving scenes from the film. The film was mainly shot in India, Rio de Janeiro and Durban, becoming the first major Hindi film to be picturized in Brazil. Many critics praised the film's heavy action sequences. The film distributor, Yash Raj Films, promoted the film by forging associations with Pepe Jeans and Coca-Cola. It was promoted as Coke Uthale, Dhoom Machale that alluded the drink to the film's soundtrack. India's biggest video game producer company, FXLabs, also confirmed to develop a game based on the film's theme by naming it as Dhoom 2.5.
Premiering on November 23, 2006 in the United States, the film had the widest release in India with over 650 prints across the country. It became the highest grossing Indian film of 2006, fourth highest-grossing Bollywood film in India and the eighth highest-grossing Bollywood film in overseas markets. The film was generally well-received by both critics and the mass audience. It was a box office success and was elevated to a "blockbuster" rating on Box Office India after grossing over Rs 1.34 billion (USD$34 million). The film received 80% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Plot
The film begins with Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan) sky-diving and landing on a train that is carrying the British Queen. He steals the her crown by disguising himself as the Queen and escapes. Newly-promoted officer Ali Akbar Fateh Khan (Uday Chopra) and Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) are introduced to Sonali Bose (Bipasha Basu), a special officer assigned to investigate Mr. A's case. After the initial investigation, Dixit's analyzes the underlying trend in Mr. A's heists. As per his analysis, a theft in a Mumbai city museum will follow.
Dixit's analysis proves wrong, however, when disguised Mr. A steals a rare diamond from another museum and escapes. Mr. A challenges the police on a television channel that he would steal an ancient warrior sword. Upon seeing this, Dixit, Bose and Khan enforce a strict vigil at the location housing the sword. At night, Mr. A meets his fake in the room that holds the sword. The police get alerted, and as a result Mr. A and his fake escape after stealing the sword together. The fake turns out to be Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai), a woman who idolizes Mr. A. They form an alliance of sorts.
In Rio de Janeiro, Mr. A and Sunehri plan for the next heist. Based on the conclusions of Dixit's analysis, Rio is named to be next city of Mr. A's heist. Khan and Dixit travel to Rio. Meanwhile the relationship between Mr. A and Sunehri evolves into romance. He unveils his real identity, as Aryan, to her. However, Mr. A realizes that Sunehri is working for Jai under Jai's orders after meeting them together at theatre and a parade. Aryan then forced Sunehri to play a game of Russian Roulette. Then, Aryan and Sunehri tried to shoot each other (Sunehri was crying and denied to do it because she loved Aryan, but Aryan forced her). However, after six shots from the gun, neither was injured because Aryan had inserted no bullet into the gun. Sunehri admitted she betrayed him and she loved Aryan. Later, they shared a kiss. Meanwhile, in Rio De Janeiro, Ali develops strong affections towards Monali.
The next heist becomes successful for Aryan and Sunehri. After the robbery, Sunehri imprints that she does not wish to remain allied with Jai. Hence, Jai and Ali are forced to go after them. After the chase, all of them end up on the top of a waterfall, where Sunehri is caught by Ali. Sunehri, despite conveying her feelings for Aryan, shoots him, perhaps to prevent Jai from capturing him. Aryan falls from the waterfall, whilst Sunehri escapes from Jai and Ali. After some years, it is revealed that Aryan is still alive and has opened a restaurant (location not mentioned) with Sunehri. Jai meets Aryan and Sunehri at the restaurant. In spite of their previous crimes, Jai states that he doesn't wish to imprison the couple, being aware of their feelings towards each other. He departs the restaurant, with Ali, receiving a phone-call which requests his acceptance for solving another case.
Cast
- Hrithik Roshan as Aryan/Mr. A, a professional thief living in disguise everyday. He steals ancient museum collections such as first man made coin, queen's crown, sword and more. He only steals at selected museum in order to mark "A" on the map of the world.
- Aishwarya Rai as Sunehri, another thief who tries to be Mr. A. She was sent by Assistant Commissioner Jai Dixit to find more about Mr. A/Aryan. Soon, she started to love Mr. A/Aryan herself and not to work for Jai anymore.
- Abhishek Bachchan as Jai Dixit, an Assistant Commissioner trying to find Aryan/Mr. A hardly. Jai is accompanied by Inspector Ali and married to Sweety Dixit.
- Uday Chopra as Ali Akbar Fateh Khan, an assistant to Jai Dixit and an inspector. He is seriusly in love with Monali Bose. Ali often dreams about him, his future wife and future children after he sees someone he likes.
- Bipasha Basu as Sonali Bose and Monali Bose, twin having different personalities. Sonali is a tough Assistant Commissioner, meanwhile Monali is a joyful girl, living at the Rio de Janeiro.
- Rimi Sen as Sweety Dixit, Jai's wife, who felt suspicious on him upon his relationship (as a friend) with Sonali and she is pregnant.
The casts in the film was minimum only, focusing on the five main characters; Aryan/Mr.A, Sunehri, Jai Dixit, Ali Khan, Sonali and Monali Bose. All the casts were set to remain in the film, where John Abraham was excluded. Replacing the villain of the film, Hrithik Roshan signed into the film. Aishwarya Rai was eventually rumored to portray a role in the film, which excited the fans of the first film. The rumors inspired the filmmakers to include Aishwarya Rai into the film.
Production
The Dhoom series begun since the release of Dhoom on 2006. Dhoom released to be a commercial box office success and generally received positive reviews from audiences. The film was considered to be a "blockbuster". The film revitalized media interest in the franchise, Yash Chopra announced a sequel for the film, titled Dhoom 2: Back In Action. John Abraham, portrayer of Kabir Sharma, the villain of the predecessor, was in talk to appear in the film, but Yash Chopra denied to not repeat same stories in the film. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai was introduced into the film as the film's main villains. Aishwarya Rai's character was summarized as a Catwoman, a female fictional comic book character. Aishwarya Rai was told by Aditya Chopra to lose weight after gaining it for Template:Fy's Bride & Prejudice. Aishwarya Rai stated, "All I can tell you is it would be nothing like anything you've seen me do before." Yash Chopra stated about Aishwarya Rai;
But yes, the role does require Aishwarya to convey oodles of sensuality. She has asked for a couple of months to get into shape. We (at Yash Raj Films) are very clear about every character in every script and what's required of the actors. Before Dhoom, Esha Deol was specifically briefed about the look and the attitude she needed to cultivate. She readily agreed, and look at what Dhoom did to her career!
Sanjay Gadhvi also denied the usage of motocycles in the film to keep his policies; he stated the film is different than Dhoom. Hrithik Roshan had to perform dangerous stunts for the film, he went on training for roller-blading, sand boarding and motorcycle stunts. Dhoom 2 was filmed at particular foreign countries (outside India) and inside India. Filming was at Mumbai, India, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Namibia and Durban, South Africa. The film become the first Bollywood film to be filmed at Brazil. The film also used several major visual effects, so Sanjay Gadhvi filmed the scenes at his studio, Yash Raj Studios.
Qatar Airways sponsored the air travels for the whole entire casts from India to South Africa. Hrithik Roshan also lost 12 pounds of weight on Aditya Chopra's insistence so that he suits his character perfectly. Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan's roles together was appropriate. The duel revitalized the duel to star in another film together, Jodhaa Akbar. The film was filmed in eighteen months (one and a half year) at the cost of Rs 350 million. During filming at Yash Raj Studios, the film suffered of a flood that eventually destroys the sets of the studio, caused the production took a longer time. The fight and action sequences were completed with visual effects. The scenes were sketched and shown to Allan Amin, he changes the camera angles, Sanjay Gadhvi made some changes again. They had a proper shot list and those were sketched fair, inked and shared with Tata Elxsi who has done the visual effects for both Dhoom and pre visualization for Dhoom 2.
Sanjay Gadhvi used all real made stunts (realism) in Dhoom and less stunts in Dhoom 2 compared to Dhoom. The film uses green screen and computer-generated imagery techonology to suit the action sequences. Hrithik Roshan's scene where he performed stunts on a train at Namib Desert used green screen, Sanjay Gadhvi filmed again the scene at the real desert. The bullet effects were also generated by visual effects. Abhishek Bachchan came out of a lake using a jet ski also used green screen, Abhishek stunt came out of 90 degrees, but Sanjay Gandhvi wants 60 degrees jump. So, Sanjay Gandhvi shot the scenes on Super 35. Hrithik's character was made to fight, but Sanjay Gandhvi wants him to be safe, which eventually increase the usage of green screen and computer-generated imagery. Hrtihik's character was comapared to a combination of a thief and a genius scientist inventing gadgets, where his gadgets such as toy car in black, holographic image of the diamond and the mechanical arm are all computer-generated imagery. The manhole that Hrithik stood on was also a result of computer-generated imagery. Sanjay Gandhvi told about Dhoom 2 in an interview;
We've done animation and pre-visualization for all the action sequences in Dhoom 2 and that is very important in terms of planning, cost effectiveness and also it's a new way of preparing for shoot and the film specially which is as set on such a large canvas such as Dhoom 2. In Dhoom 1 we had all the action sequences broken down and written. In this movie we had very big action sequences so we had all the scenes storyboarded and they would be checked, double checked and triple checked by myself, Alan Amin and Adi and we would then rectify if needed and that would be our level of planning.
Pritam Chakraborty, who composed music for the predecessor, also composed the music for Dhoom 2. Pritam's huge success was Dhoom's soundtrack and Dhoom 2's soundtrack. The soundtrack released on October 19, 2006 with six songs written by Sameer (all six of them) and performed by various artists. Pritam said about the score, "If Dhoom 1 and Dhoom 2 would have been released on the same day and people would have heard both of them, then Dhoom 2 would have been a much better album. But now D2 will get competition from D1, which has grown so much and has become so big. Although I am afraid about that competition, the quality of D2 is much better."
Reception
Dhoom's teaser trailer was premiered along with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, during Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna released on August 11, Template:Fy. The film had several tie-ins to promote the film. Yash Raj Films promoted the film with Pepe Jeans and Coca-Cola. It was promoted as "Coke Uthale, Dhoom Machale". The products were available across 70 Pepe stores in India, the products include garments, bandanas, metal accessories and caps. The price range for T-shirts starts from Rs 599, shirts for Rs 899, jeans for Rs 1,999 and cargo pants for Rs 1,799. For ladies, it is Rs 100 fewer than men’s articles. Chetan Shah, country head, Pepe Jeans London, told:
This is the first time Pepe Jeans has tied up with any movie anywhere in the world for merchandising initiatives. We are Dhoom 2’s exclusive brand partners to merchandise, produce and sell apparels and accessories worn by actors like Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan.
Dhoom 2 successfully grossed USD$979,000 at North America on its opening weekend in 63 theaters, becoming the third largest opening weekend for Bollywood films at North America. The film topped the American box office with a seventeenth ranking at box office. The film's first day opening gross became the highest opening day gross at Dubai for Bollywood films. In Mumbai, the film's distributors shared profit of Rs 9.42 crores (Rs 94.2 million). Dhoom 2 ranked sixth at the United Kingdom's international film weekend gross with a gross (average per screen) of £8,151. At Australia box office, the film opened at twelve ranking, collecting approximately $176,462. Meanwhile, the film grossed approximately $51,453 at New Zealand on 5 screens with eighth ranking, later fluctuated the next following weeks.
The film performed successfully at the India. It broke several records made by blockbuster films; opening day and opening weekend grosses mostly. At Kerala, the film released in 22 centres in the states and grossed a sum of Rs 65 lakh (Rs 65,000,000) within a week. In Kochi, it released at two theaters, from where the first week's gross was Rs 12 lakh. From Crown and Kozhikode, the total gross was more than Rs 6 lakh. At Andra Pradesh and elsewhere Telugu areas, the film ran over 100 days, confirming good reception. At Chennai, the film set record of grossing Rs 3,45,462 on the first weekend, becoming success at Chennai. The film opened to be second place on the following weeks at Chennai after the release of celebrated Veyil. Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, the film received a good reception. The film was a box office success and was elevated to a "blockbuster" rating on Box Office India after grossing over Rs 1.34 billion (USD$34 million) with a budget of Rs 350 million. Box Office Mojo reports the film's gross, whereby USD$2,643,586 inside United States and USD$29,752,841 at foreign countries (including India).
Despite great box office performances, the film received most positive reviews from fans. Review aggregation from Rotten Tomatoes was 80% "fresh" certificate based on five reviews. People of Variety commented, "loaded with enough attitude, Bollywood starpower and buff bodies to stop a speeding train." Rachel Saltz of The New York Times reviewed, "The pleasure principle is palpable in the giddy, slick “Dhoom 2,” a satisfying example of the new, thoroughly modern Bollywood. The film is shot in sharp, primary colors, with sophisticated stunts, exotic location hopping and songs sung partly in English (and available on iTunes no less). Beginning in the Namibian desert with a bit of post-colonial mischief — the theft (literally) of the British crown — and making stops in Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro, this cops and robbers tale embraces and devours every cliché, style and half-naked body it encounters. “Dhoom 2” may represent the newfangled Bollywood, but old-fashioned star power is what animates and elevates it above its occasional narrative flaws and longueurs."
Film Journal International's Ethan Alter said, "Dhoom 2 has all of the benefits of a big-budget Bollywood production: big-name stars, exotic locales, well-produced musical numbers and elaborate (by Bollywood standards, anyway) action sequences, including a daring train robbery and an extended motorcycle chase outside of Rio. In other words, it's exactly like all of the mainstream programmers that Hollywood churns out every summer, although those movies often suffer from a conspicuous shortage of singing and dancing on DayGlo sets. (Just think of how some peppy dance numbers would have enlivened generic blockbusters like Poseidon and X-Men: The Last Stand.) Dhoom 2 makes no lasting contributions to world cinema, but if two-and-a-half hours of disposable entertainment are all you're after, you could do far worse."
L.A. Weekly's David Chute stated the film, "A movie meal as satisfying as this one can make you feel that nothing else matters. " Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama reported, "On the whole, Dhoom 2 is a winner all the way. At the box-office, the film has already embarked on an earth-shattering initial and with multiple shows being conducted at multiplexes with inflated ticket rates, the film will set new records in days to come. For Yash Raj, who've not only produced but also distributed the film, Dhoom 2 should emerge as one of the biggest hits of their career. Blockbuster!" The review mostly praised the casting, performances, visual effects usage, direction, musical score and story, giving it three and a half stars over five ().
Although that, the film received several negative reviews for fans of the film. Jaspreet Pandohar of BBC critically claimed the film, "By roping in acclaimed action director Alan Amin to take care of the thrills and spills, you'd expect Gadhvi to have spent time crafting out a sophisticated storyline instead of simply sending his cast on a cat-and-mouse chase around the globe. That the twist in Dhoom 2's tail is not explained is yet another shortcoming. It's only Roshan's charismatic performance as the criminal mastermind, and the sizzling chemistry he shares with Rai's sassy cohort, that rescues this adventure from becoming an elongated tourism commercial." Jaspreet Pandohar gave the film two out of five stars ().
The film had eventually caused several impacts on either public or casts. The film's styles and techniques of driving motorcycles had caused youth in India to imitate the stunts, resulting in an increase in the number of road accidents in Mumbai, India. Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan eventually fell for each other since the film, and got married on April 20, 2007. The film also sparked a controversy for a scene containing a kiss between Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan. The robberies involved in the film wasn't inspired from any other robberies, non compared to Dhoom. Although that, the robberies was good enough, till it inspired a teenager to rob his uncle's money, where the teenager wore dress similar to Hrithik's clothing.. India's biggest game producer company, FXLabs, also confirmed to release a video game titled Dhoom 2.5, based on the film. The characters in the film also will appear in the video game. Yash Raj Films CEO Sanjeev Kohli said,
Gaming is fast gaining acceptance among our target audience and this is the first time an Indian movie is being extended into a game. Dhoom had become a favorite film with youngsters and Dhoom 2 has gone a step beyond. The Dhoom 2 video game will feature characters from the movie as well as all the action and excitement our fans have come to expect.

Home media release
Dhoom 2 released in DVD format on May 2, 2007 with a rating of Parental Guidance 12 Accompanied/Advisory. This DVD release was distributed by Yash Raj Films all around the world (in all regions). The DVD release contains two discs with English subtitles. The film is also noteworthy because it's soundtrack is the first in Indian cinema to be released in DVD-Audio, along with other audio formats. The tracks have been mixed in London, England in 5.1 Surround Sound and audiophiles can choose the format from the audio menu.

The songs for the film was composed by Pritam Chakraborty and Sameer (except Dhoom Again by Asif Ali Beg) wrote all the lyrics for the songs. The audio of the film released worldwide on 19 October 2006, one month prior to the release. The soundtrack was successfully received with praise, with Bollywood Hungama giving three out of five stars ().
