Bukkake (Japanese: ぶっかけ) pronunciation (1: IPA: /bu̜ˈk:ake̞/ 2: IPA: /bʊˈkæke/) is a sexual practice that features a person (usually a woman) being ejaculated on by several men. It may also involve the semen being eaten. Bukkake is similar to the related practice of gokkun, in which several men ejaculate into a container for the receiver to drink. The practice is a relatively prevalent niche in contemporary pornographic films, some of which involve hundreds of male participants. There is debate on whether to class bukkake as a paraphilia such as hygrophilia, sexual arousal from contact with bodily secretions.

Etymology

Bukkake is the noun form of the Japanese verb bukkakeru (ぶっ掛ける, to dash or splash water), and means "To dash", "splash" or "heavy splash". The compound verb can be decomposed into two verbs: butsu (ぶつ) and kakeru (掛ける). Butsu literally means to hit, but in this usage it appears to be an intensive prefix as in buttamageru (ぶったまげる, "completely astonished") or butchigiri (ぶっちぎり, "overwhelming win").

Kakeru in this context means to shower or pour. The word bukkake is often used in Japanese to describe pouring out water with sufficient momentum to cause splashing or spilling. Indeed, bukkake is used in Japan to describe a type of dish where the broth is poured on top of noodles, as in bukkake-udon and bukkake-soba.

History

The common legend is that bukkake originated in ancient Japan, where an unfaithful woman was publicly punished by being tied up as every man in town ejaculated onto her face. The existence of such a practice in ancient Japan is disputed, and the supposed ancient origins of bukkake may be an urban legend.

Bukkake was first represented in pornographic films in the mid to late 1980s in Japan. A significant factor in the development of bukkake as a pornographic form was the mandatory censorship of genitalia in Japan. Genitals must be pixelated by a "mosaic". One consequence of this is that Japanese pornography tends to focus more on the face and body of actresses, rather than their genitals. Since film producers could not show penetration they sought other ways to depict sex acts without violating Japanese law. Semen was not required to be censored, thus creating a loophole for harder sex scenes. The first known recorded and publicly released act of bukkake in Japanese pornography was in the movie Mascot Note (マスカットノート) starring Matsuoka Aiko, released in December 1986, the act being previously known simply as gansha (顔射, "facial ejaculation"). However, popularization of the act and the term for it has been credited to director Kazuhiko Matsumoto in 1998. The practice then spread from Japan to American and then European pornography after US porn producers discovered Japanese bukkake videos in the late 1990s. There was an economic advantage for Western pornographers to produce bukkake films, since they only require one actress and often amateur male performers whose pay-rates are low. However bukkake is less popular than some other porn niches, possibly because the subordination of the woman does not appeal to many consumers, or because in pornography cum-shots are normally the climax of a scene, rather than the "main event".

The practice then spread to gay pornography, in which several men ejaculate on another man. Pornographic use of the word has been expanded by the lesbian bukkake series, in which several women purportedly ejaculate on another woman.

The 17th World Congress of Sexology in Montreal in July 2005 included a presentation on bukkake.

Examples of bukkake pornography

American Bukkake is a film series focussing on bukkake produced by JM Productions and directed by Jim Powers. JM shoots scenes in North Hollywood every Wednesday night, for three weeks running, every third month. The male performers are members of the public who have replied to newspaper adverts or have called the "bukkake hotline" telephone number. Normally 50 to 100 men take part, who are paid $35 each. Some of the men disguise their identities by wearing masks or bandanas over their faces. The female performers are professional pornographic actresses, and are paid $500 for a shoot that usually lasts around two hours. On 21 May 2001 JM's offices were raided by twenty officers from the LAPD. The officers confiscated several bukkake-themed videos. In response Jeff Steward stated, "Some guy swims in feces on MTV, and that's OK? But for a girl to swallow 80 loads of cum is obscene? I dont think so." On the evening of the raid, Jim Powers was in North Hollywood filming another American Bukkake film. In reference to what he considered the injustice of the raid, he announced to the men involved, "We're doing this for all of America".

German Goo Girls (GGG) is a German film series from John Thompson Productions, which has helped to make the company one of the best known and top selling German and European porn studios. The GGG series started in 1998. It focuses on bukkake , however also features gangbangs, lesbian sex and very occasionally urolagnia, and is the most successful of all JT productions. GGG is distributed in the United States by Black Widow Productions, who had to move to a larger warehouse to cope with demand for the series. GGG won in the 'Special Video production' category at the 2004 Venus Awards. GGG title 'Cissie's Cum Show' was nominated in the 'Best Specialty Release – Other Genre' category at the 2006 AVN Awards The series also won the Adam Film World 'Most Outrageous Sex Series' award in 2005, and is discussed in the 2008 book 'Alles über Porno!', by Marcel Feige. Importing the GGG title 'Vollgespritzt & Vollgepisst' to Canada is prohibited, due to it being deemed obscene by the Canadian authorities. GGG launched the career of Annette Schwarz; so far the only actress to have worked with John Thompson to have gone onto a successful mainstream porn career in the United States.

Criticism

Some feminists have described bukkake as a fetish culture somehow "beyond sex". Others describe bukkake as symbolic group rape, with its primary purpose as the humiliation, degradation and objectification of women, and that the use of ejaculation is part of a humiliation ritual and generally does not involve any of the female characters experiencing orgasm. However according to the Village Voice, "The porn phenomenon known as bukkake shoots homophobia and misogyny right in the face".
