The iSlate, formerly known as the Apple Tablet, is a forthcoming tablet PC to be released by Apple Inc. The iSlate will be unveiled at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on January 26, 2010, although it will not be available for sale until February. The iSlate will have a 10.1-inch multi-touch display and will retail for approximately 1,000 USD.
The iSlate is widely expected to compete against dedicated e-book devices such as the Barnes & Noble nook while offering a more favorable 70-30 revenue split with publishers, the same arrangement accorded developers of the App Store. These arrangements would also extend to print publishers who currently receive less in digital work royalties from companies like Amazon.com.
Features
Two versions of the iSlate will be available. One model will feature a small digital camera for videoconferencing while the other will be targeted at the education market. At least one version will feature a 3G modem for connectivity to mobile phone networks, similar to the iPhone. It will be compatible with applications from the App Store, although Apple has asked certain developers to adapt their existing applications for a larger screen.
Reception
Steve Jobs is "extremely happy" with the iSlate.
Laura DiDio, a principal analyst at ITIC, has called the iSlate "the next big thing." DiDio is particularly optimistic that the built-in camera will be useful for video conferencing on the go. Dan Ackerman of CNET states that the iSlate will "blow everyone away." Most analysts believe that the iSlate will take away significant market share from e-book readers, from netbooks, and from Microsoft, although the iSlate will not replace the iPhone.

On Tuesday, November 21, 2006, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for ISLATE. This trademark is owned by Slate Computing (USA) LLC of Wilmington, Deleware. This trademark would otherwise not warrant mention but for the notoriety it has recently received in major online news publications. According to a article in TechCrunch on December 25, 2009, the iSlate trademark is name of the upcoming Apple Inc., Tablet product, rumored to be coming out in January 2010. Furthermore, according to the MacRumors website, the person who signed on the U.S. federal trademark is likely a Senior Trademark Specialist working for Apple Computer. Similar speculation as to the significance of this mark, and the overwhelming evidence to support its significance have been made in major online and offline media including CNN Money, CNET, and ComputerWorld.
