Adapting the books for television
Some artistic license has been taken in adapting the books for television, including name changes, design alterations, the creation of entirely new characters and the gender reassignment of existing characters. Mr. Rude, Mr. Quiet, Mr. Strong, Mr. Grumpy, Little Miss Magic, Mr. Tall, Little Miss Bossy, Mr. Funny, Little Miss Curious, Mr. Fussy, Little Miss Naughty, Little Miss Whoops, Mr. Messy, Little Miss Helpful, Mr. Small, Mr. Nosy, Mr. Jelly and Mr. Lazy have undergone re-imaginings, with Mr. Jelly furthermore being renamed to Mr. Nervous and Mr. Greedy furthermore being renamed to Mr. Hungry (it should be noted in season 1 that Mr. Fussy was renamed Mr. Persnickety). Little Miss Calamity and Little Miss Daredevil were created exclusively for the television series (with Little Miss Calamity only appearing in Season 1), while the book’s female characters of Little Miss Stubborn and Little Miss Scatterbrain have been changed to Mr. Stubborn and Mr. Scatterbrain. Mr. Tall, Mr. Funny, Little Miss Curious, Little Miss Bossy, Little Miss Magic and Little Miss Giggles appeared in Season 2.
Dillydale
In Roger Hargreaves' original book series, each of the Mr. Men and Little Miss characters were given a hometown: Happyland, Tiddletown, Nonsenseland - in the television series, all the characters live in the same city, the township of Dillydale. The name "Dillydale" was coined by series producer Peggy Regan. To commemorate the historic naming, Peggy was presented with a plaque and the honorary title "The Mayor of Dillydale".
American and English versions
The Mr. Men show is dubbed from English (U.S. version) into English (UK version). With the exceptions of Mr. Scatterbrain and Mr. Rude, the American voice cast is completely different from the British cast.
The artists at Renegade Animation animate the Mr. Men Show character actions to the U.S. cast's performance. The finished episodes are then shipped to the UK for overdubbing, where the UK cast mimics the US cast, matching the existing lip sync in much the same process that is employed when dubbing Godzilla films from Japanese into English.
