Revision as of 21:13, 7 January 2006 by Khoikhoi (talk | contribs) (how do you say "stop" in Moldovan?... or according to you guys, Romanian?)(diff) ← Previous revision | Latest revision (diff) | Newer revision → (diff)Moldovan or Moldovans (also Moldavian or Moldavians) can refer to:
- Moldovans a name for the Romanian-speaking people living in the area of the former principality of Moldavia, now divided between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
- Moldovans, an ethnic group, living mainly in the Republic of Moldova, where they comprise 76.1% of population, and in Ukraine, where they comprise 0.5% of the population. The Moldavians of Romania and Moldovans of Moldova are considered by some pan-Romanianists to be the same ethnicity, Romanian, and they allege that such a classification was universally accepted until after the Soviet annexation of Bessarabia in the 1940s, when they allege a new identity was forged by Stalin. Their dominant religion is Eastern Orthodoxy. Before the establishment of the Soviet power, the majority, together with the whole Romania, belonged to Romanian Orthodox Church. The Soviet Moldova was under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church. In the independent Moldova, Moldovan Orthodox Church and Bessarabian Orthodox Church are established; see Religion in Moldova.
- Moldovans can also refer to Moldovan nationals, regardless of ethnicity.
