Debut of national teams
Each successive World Cup has had at least one team appearing for the first time. Countries competing in their first World Cup are listed in the table below.

The team ranking in each tournament is according to FIFA. The rankings, apart from the top four positions (top two in 1930), are not a result of direct competition between the teams; instead, teams eliminated in the same round are ranked by their full results in the tournament. In recent tournaments, FIFA has used the rankings for seedings for the final tournament draw.
For each tournament, the flag of the host country and the number of teams in each finals tournament (in brackets) are shown.

- Brazil are the only team to have competed in every staging of the World Cup final tournaments (19 so far). Germany and Italy follow with 17 appearances: the Mannschaft did not enter in 1930 and was not allowed to compete in 1950 ; the Azzurri did not enter either in 1930 and they were eliminated during the qualifiers in 1958 (finishing 2nd of their qualifying group behind Northern Ireland).
- Together with Brazil, France are the only team to have played at least one game in every World Cup full competition (19 so far), thus preliminary competition included. The following teams did not appear in only 1 of the 19 World Cup full competitions so far:Yugoslavia because they were suspended due to war during qualifying process for 1994 ; Belgium because they withdrew from the preliminary competition for 1950 ; United States because they withdrew from the preliminary competition for 1938, as a protest against the hosting of the World Cup final competition in Europe rather than in America ; Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Israel and Luxembourg because they did not enter the first staging of the competition in 1930.
- Brazil hold almost all major World Cup final competition records : most World Cup titles (5, followed by Italy, 4), most World Cup final competition participations (19 incl. South Africa 2010, followed by Germany and Italy, both 17), most games won (64, followed by Germany, 55), highest tally of 'soccer points' (206 pts under the usual 3-1-0 soccer point system, followed by Germany, 184 pts), most goals scored (201, followed by Germany, 190), best goal difference (+117, followed by Germany, +77). Brazil share records of games played (92) and finals played (7) with Germany.
- Despite being the teams with most matches played (92) in World Cup final competition, Brazil and Germany only played one World Cup match against each other, when Brazil defeated Germany 2-0 on during the Korean/Japanese World Cup final, on 30th June 2002.
- Hungary hold the record for most goals scored per game played in World Cup final competition (2.72 goals scored per game, followed by Brazil, 2.18) and for most goals scored in one single World Cup final tournament (27).
- Germany and Italy share the record of most drawn games (19) in World Cup final competition (if we consider knockout stage matches needing a penalty shootout session as drawn games).
- If we consider knockout stage matches needing a penalty shootout session as drawn games, only the following teams won the World Cup by winning all of their final competition matches : Uruguay in 1930 (4 games), Italy in 1938 (4 games, among which 1 game won after extra time), Brazil in 1970 (6 games) and 2002 (7 games). The performance of Brazil in 1970 is even more remarkable as they also won 6 games out of 6 in preliminary competition. Uruguay did not play any preliminary round for 1930, as there was none, and Italy did not either for 1938 as they were automatically qualified for the World Cup as title holders. On their way to World Cup 2002, Brazil had their worse preliminary campaign ever, losing 6 games out of 18 and finishing 3rd of the South American qualifying group with 30 pts (behind Argentina, 43pts, and Ecuador, 31 pts). This was the one and only time so far that Brazil did not come up as leaders of their qualifying group.
- Before the start of the African staging of the World Cup in 2010, 708 World Cup final competition matches have been played since the creation of the tournament, among which 157 drawn games. A total of 2,063 goals were scored (thus 2.91 goals scored per game).

Results by confederation
A summary of the number of teams for each confederation that reached the corresponding rounds in each tournament. Notes about peculiarities in some editions:
- 1930 — No quarterfinal round was played that year, as the top team from each group of the first group stage advanced to the knockout semifinal round.
- 1950 — No quarterfinal round was played that year, as the top team from each group of the first group stage advanced to the final round-robin group stage. These four teams are considered as semifinalists for the purposes of this calculation. Technically no final was played that year; however, Uruguay and Brazil, who finished first and second and played a decisive final game that was part of this final group stage, are considered as finalists for the purposes of this calculation.
- 1974 and 1978 — The eight teams that advanced from the first group stage to the second group stage are considered as quarterfinalists for the purposes of this calculation. Technically no semifinal round was played those years, as the top two teams from each group of this second group stage advanced directly either to the final or the third-place game; however, these four teams are considered as semifinalists for the purposes of this calculation.
- 1982 — The twelve teams that advanced from the first group stage to the second group stage are considered as round 2 teams for the purposes of this calculation. No quarterfinal round was played that year, as the top teams from each group of this second group stage advanced to the knockout semifinal round.

Notes
- ^ Czechoslovakia qualified eight times prior to being divided into Slovakia and the Czech Republic in 1993. FIFA considers both the Czech Republic and Slovakia as successor teams of Czechoslovakia. The Czech Republic national team qualified for the World Cup for the first time as a separate nation in 2006, with Slovakia doing the same in 2010.
- ^ Germany was always represented by the same governing body (Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB)). After World War II and the division of Germany, Saar (until 1956) and East Germany (until 1990) fielded teams of their own before (re-)joining West Germany and the DFB in the German reunification. Thus, FIFA officially attributes all results of the DFB team since 1908 to Germany, including the results of West Germany which qualified for all World Cups since 1954, after having been banned for 1950.
- ^ Indonesia competed as the Dutch East Indies in 1938.
- ^ The Soviet Union qualified seven times prior to being dissolved in 1991. The 15 nations that were former Soviet Republics now compete separately. FIFA considers Russia as the successor team of the USSR.
- ^ The Democratic Republic of the Congo competed as Zaire in 1974.
- ^ The Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1930) and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1950–1990) qualified eight times from 1930–1990 under the name Yugoslavia prior to its breakup by the secession of many of its constituent republics in 1992. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia qualified once in 1998 under the name Yugoslavia, and Serbia and Montenegro qualified once in 2006 after a name change in 2003. All these teams are considered the predecessor of the current Serbia team by FIFA. The other national teams which resulted from the breakup of the original Yugoslavia — Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and FYR Macedonia — are considered distinct entities from the Yugoslavia team of 1930–1990. Montenegro now also compete separately after independence in 2006. In 2010, Serbia will debut at the FIFA World Cup with their own national team.
- ^ There was no official World Cup Third Place match in 1930; The USA and Yugoslavia lost in the semi-finals. Currently, FIFA recognizes USA as the third-placed team and Yugoslavia as the fourth-placed team, using the overall records of the teams in the 1930 FIFA World Cup.

- The Asian team in 1970 was Israel, who were then an AFC member. They were expelled from AFC in 1974 and joined UEFA in 1994.
- ^ The Oceanian teams in 1974 (Australia) and 1982 (New Zealand) both qualified after playing in a continental zone consisting of Asian and Oceanian teams.
- ^ Australia's qualification in 2006 was through the Oceanian zone as they were an OFC member during qualifying. However, on 1 January 2006, they left the OFC and joined the AFC.
