The volcano is currently active, even if no eruption is foreseen for the near future.
Its famous eruption of AD 79, reported by Pliny the Younger, covered the two towns of Pompei and Herculaneum with lava and ash, preserving a precious and unique record of Roman times and everyday life in ancient towns, including furniture, mosaics, and graffiti. The towns are reported to have been covered quickly, but the residents had time to leave, though not to take their property. The writer and scientist Pliny the Elder died studying the eruption.
