He has been in full-time ministry since 1973 with his organization, The Berean Call. Hunt has traveled to the Near East, lived in Egypt, and written numerous books on theology, prophecy, cults, and other religions. His books have sold over 4 million copies and have been translated into at least 20 languages. Hunt is associated with the Plymouth Brethren Movement, but claims only the Bible as his ultimate authority.
Theologically, Hunt is evangelical, Dispensational and Arminian.
Dave Hunt addressed Calvinism in a book called "What Love is This? Calvinism's Misrepresentation of God"(Loyal (2002). 438 pages. ISBN 1929125305; 2nd ed: The Berean Call (2004). 573 pages. ISBN 1928660126), which became one of his most controversial works. According to Calvinists, the book is inaccurate and misrepresentative of Calvinism. However, Hunt makes direct use of Calvinistic sources and maintains he is addressing the true nature and logical ends of Calvinism. Prior to publishing "What Love Is This", he was asked to abandon the book by those concerned about its controversial nature and claimed inaccuracies. Hunt's convictions and confidence on the matter obviously won out, though, as the book was published in 2002 and revised for a second edition in 2004.
Dave Hunt is certainly no stranger to controversy and ridicule. His strong belief in what he might term as the righteously-divisive nature of Biblical truth permeates his work, leading him to address topics and espouse positions few others would. Of particular note in this vein are his polemics on Catholicism, Islam, Mormonism, and the aforementioned Calvinism (see Bibliography below).
Hunt's proponents appreciate his uncompromising, candid, "no-holds-barred" approach to apologetics, while detractors label him divisive and inflammatory.
