Matthew Avery Modine (born March 22, 1959 in Loma Linda, California) is an American actor.

Modine was the youngest of seven children in a tight-knit Mormon family. After he saw a documentary about Oliver!, he decided to become an actor. After relocating to New York in 1979, he worked several odd jobs before he met his wife and started landing roles.

He is probably best known for his role as "Private Joker," the main character of Stanley Kubrick's 1987 war movie Full Metal Jacket.

In 1999, he made his directorial debut with If... Dog... Rabbit.

His most recent films include Le Divorce (2004), The Transporter 2 and the TNT miniseries Into the West.
