Background
He is a CSI from the night shift who joins Horatio Caine's day-shift team in the eighth season (episode "Bolt Action"). He is an art-theft specialist promoted to the main cast during the 8th season.
Simmons is an easy-going sort who gets on well with the other members of the lab, and he takes his job seriously, looking for all possible details that can help close a case. Simmons becomes friends with Cardoza first after he helps name a certain sample that Cardoza was having trouble with. It was always hinted that Walter and Jesse had a very friendly relationship, on and off duty. Walter is also easily frightened at times, and is scared by Wolfe and a bear in a episode. In the same episode he proudly states he has found human remains, but they are just droppings.
In the episode "All Fall Down", the crime lab is poisoned and Walter nearly dies, but is rescued. In the season 9 premiere, he's devastated by Cardoza's death. Walter takes the time to clean Jesse's face and gently talks to him, concluding he's going to miss his friend. Walter later plays a basketball game originally meant to be played with Jesse, and the other CSIs come to play with him in Jesse's memory.
