Offa's date of birth is unknown. He became King of Mercia in 757AD, and, as a result of subsequent military successes, effectively ruled the whole of England south of the Humber over a period. He was a devout Christian, a contemporary of Charlemagne, and founded the diocese of Lichfield. He is best known, however, for the building of Offa's Dyke, a great earth wall which he constructed in order to keep the Welsh out of his territory. He died in 796.
