Hyperion Planning is a budgeting and forecasting application from Oracle formerly owned by Hyperion Solutions Corporation. Hyperion Planning uses Essbase (a multidimensional database product sold by Hyperion) as a database and calculation engine, a relational repository for business logic, and includes a web-based user interface.

Hyperion Solutions Corporation was purchased by Oracle Corporation in March 2007.

The software itself is a collection of JavaServer Pages and Java Servlets that provide a web interface, as part of an N-tier architecture: a relational database (Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 or Oracle database), Java EE servlet container (Apache Tomcat, IBM WebSphere, BEA Weblogic or Oracle Application Server), and the Essbase server itself make up a full installation of the product.

With Oracle Hyperion Planning, you can meet your immediate financial planning needs while enabling a platform for future cross-functional expansion and automated process integration. It is used in financial operation.

Hyperion Planning Products

Hyperion Planning is a framework to build, develop and run Planning and Budgeting Applications. Hyperion Planning can install a sample application that runs out of the box. But, every organization has their own departments, accounts, products, etc. and associated trees or hierarchies. Forms, calculation logic, reports, and process management all rely on the company's numbering, descriptions, and structure to define how and where planning models are run. Budgeting and planning requirements vary so much across organizations that it would be impossible to have a standard application that could be utilized by all businesses. Configuration of the application is required to tailor the solution to the requirements of each company.

Hyperion Planning does offer a pre-built budgeting and planning solution for Workforce Planning and Capital Asset Management. These modules typically require little configuration if you intend to use the models as they are provided.
