Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati is a spiritual teacher born to Jewish parents in Brooklyn, U.S.A. Her outlook has been influenced by Jesus Christ and the Hindu saint Nityananda, both of whom she claims have appeared to her . She has claims to have been informed directly by the teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, Ramana Maharshi and Shirdi Sai Baba. Ma Jaya’s teaching is a self-described "eclectic mix of the deep spiritual wisdom of all times and places. She teaches that God is ultimately "beyond words" and without form and yet manifests in countless ways to lead us to liberation".

Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati founded the Kashi Ashram, "an international interfaith community based on kindness, compassion and service", in Sebastian, Florida in 1976. While many consider Kashi Ashram to be a holy place, there are many who consider it a dangerous cult: "Several former key members Bhagavati of brainwashing, intimidation through violence, illegal drug use and siphoning off nonprofit funds for shopping and gambling sprees".
