Brookdale Community College is an accredited, coeducational, public community college in Lincroft, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Brookdale Community College was created in 1967 to provide secondary education throughout Monmouth County. It has secondary campuses in Neptune Township, Freehold Township, Hazlet, Long Branch, Sandy Hook and Wall Township. The College operates through the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders through an appointed Board of Trustees that sets policies, tuition and fees and monitors education programs.As of May 2011 the college is under a criminal investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office relating to alleged criminal fraud in the President's Office during the administration of President Peter Burnham of Colts Neck. Since being suspended without pay Burnham has retired, while Executive Assistant to the President, Louise Horgan of Keyport is still employed at the college. Lincroft campus
The Lincroft campus comprises 22 buildings totaling 731,353 square feet (67,944.9 m), including the Center for the Visual Arts, the Bankier Library, the Center for World War II Studies and the Donald D. Warner Student Life Center. The Robert J. Collins Arena holds special events for the college including conventions, concerts and athletic competitions. The arena has 2 levels. The upper level contains a 4 lane indoor track on the upper level that is 1/10 of a mile (10 laps = 1 mile). The lower level has a basketball court, where the Brookdale's men and women’s basketball teams play. They are known as the Jersey Blues. The arena was renovated in 2010 to further accommodate concerts, trade shows, tournaments, and other events. That same year, the college opened up a new fitness center adjacent to the Collins Arena.
The Lincroft campus has 7 parking lots for students and faculty. There is also a small parking lot for the campus police station, Receiving and Mail Center, and Maintenance Center.
The Swimming River Reservoir is located behind the campus.
High Technology High School, a magnet school for students from Monmouth County, is located near the eastern edge of the Lincroft Campus. It is operated by the Monmouth County Vocational School District.
The Lincroft campus is also home to the Monmouth Museum, the 360-seat Brookdale Performing Arts Center and Brookdale Public Radio, "90.5 The Night" (WBJB-FM). Both the Performing Arts Center and 90.5 The Night serve the Brookdale and Monmouth County community with shows, performances, National Public Radio, and rock music.
Curriculum
The college offers over 60 different two-year degree programs and a variety of degree certificates. Additionally, the college through its Business and Community Development and SCOPE initiative offers non-credit classes and IT Certificate training. In 2003, Brookdale launched the NJ Coastal Communiversity program to offer bachelor and masters degrees to students. The courses are offered in partnership with Georgian Court University, Kean University, Montclair State University, New Jersey City University, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
The New Jersey Stars program allows the top 20% of high school graduates free two-year tuition for matriculated students while attending a community college in New Jersey. The program has extended into NJ Stars 2 which provides a partial scholarship towards New Jersey four-year universities.
Alpha Pi Theta, Brookdale's Phi Theta Kappa chapter enables students to graduate with honors and seek numerous scholarships when transferring to four-year universities. All students who complete their first semester with a GPA of 3.7 or higher are invited to join PTK.
Forensics, Brookdale's award winning speech and debate team competes internationally annually. They consistently compete well against top four-year universities on the East Coast, competing in speaking events such as After Dinner Speaking, Informational Speaking, Persuasion, Prose, Program Oral Interpretation, Duo, and other limited prep events.
Smoking ban
In December 2010, the Brookdale Community College Board of Trustees voted to make all Brookdale campuses tobacco free. Students are only allowed to smoke in their own vehicles. Prohibited products include, but are not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco and snuff. This ban was implemented on January 1, 2011.
Notable alumni
- Jim Hunter, formerly of CBS Sports and currently an exclusive broadcaster on the MASN that covers the Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles.
- Kevin Smith (born 1970), film director, screenwriter, and actor, perhaps best known for the cult classic Clerks. Brookdale's Criminal Justice degree program was mentioned during the jail scene in his film Clerks 2. He received an Associate of Letters degree at the graduation of the Class of 2007.
- Brian Williams (born 1959), current anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News.
- Madlyn-Ann C. Woolwich (born 1937), pastel and impressionist painter and author of several books and articles on the subject.
- David P. Rible (born 1967), Assistant Republican Whip of New Jersey's General Assembly.
- Denny Walling (born 1954), Major League Baseball Third Baseman for the Houston Astros.
- James Urbaniak (born 1963), critically lauded actor of film, stage, and voice. Portrays Dr. Venture, amongst other characters, on The Venture Brothers.
Notable faculty and staff
- Jeffrey Ford (born 1955), fantasy, science fiction, and mystery author and recipient of the Edgar Allan Poe Award, the Nebula Award, and the World Fantasy Award, among others. He is currently a professor of writing and literature at Brookdale.
- Sally Priesand (born 1946), America's first female rabbi. She serves on the Board of the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale.
- Peter Burnham, first community college president in the State of New Jersey to face a criminal investigation.
