Jacob Arabo (a.k.a. "Jacob the Jeweler", born Yakov Arabov) is a famed Bukharian-American Jewish jeweler who is owner and founder of Jacob & Company. He is also well known for providing watches and other jewelry to hip hop artists, National Basketball Association players, and other celebrities like Sir Elton John, Bono, David Beckham and Rudy Giuliani in the United States.

Biography

Jacob Arabo was born Yakov Arabov in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He moved to the United States at the age of 14. He dropped out of high school to enroll in a six-month jewelry design course. By age 21, he had opened a kiosk in the Kaplan Jewelry Exchange. Beginning in the 1990s, he started designing pieces for hip-hop artists.

Partly because of his penchant for accepting payment in large sums of cash, he became well acquainted with his clientele and became a regular on the hip-hop social scene. In 2004, he opened a $12.2 million flagship store on East 57th Street along with billionaire Lev Leviev.

In June 2006, Arabo was arrested and accused of being part of a money-laundering scheme instigated by a Detroit-based crime family, the Black Mafia Family, as well as not declaring large purchases in cash to the IRS. In October 2007, after admitting to lying to investigators, Arabo and his attorney, Ben Brafman, entered a plea in which the more serious charges of money-laundering were dropped. In June 2008, Arabo was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, with the sentence to start on January 15, 2009.
