What may seem like a superfluous term today is best understood in light of societies where pederasty as a form of upbringing and pedagogy were the norm, but where other age similar relations were frowned upon.
Magnus Hirschfeld offered a three-fold age classification system for homosexuals: 1) Ephebophiles, who prefer partners from about 17-20; 2) Androphiles, who love men from 20 into the 50's; 3) Gerontophiles, who seek out old men.
Today it can also be used to define the sexual orientation of a male-attracted transgendered or intersexual person, since the terms homosexual or heterosexual present problems when applied to them; androphilia, rather than focusing on the sex or gender of the person attracted, instead focuses on their subject of attraction.
