The Gaza Strip is a narrow strip of land in the southwest of Palestine, currently occupied by Israel. Despite its small size, it is home to about one million Palestinians, mostly refugees who fled Israel in the 1948 war; as a result it has one of the highest population densities in the world. At the end of the 1948 war, it was under Egyptian control, under which it remained until it was occupied by Israel during the 1967 war. Since then, Israel has constructed several settlements in the Gaza Strip, which although they contain only a few thousand people, they occupy a significant proportion of the land area of the Strip, and several orders of magnitude more land per capita than Palestinian population.
