He is perhaps best known for his lead role as a disaffected corporate employee in the cult classic Office Space. More recently, he starred in HBO's Band of Brothers as Captain Lewis Nixon. He also appeared as Jack Berger, Carrie's boyfriend in the fifth and sixth seasons of Sex and the City, as well as in the episode "TB or not TB" of House.
He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His mother is a Lutheran minister and his father is an aerospace engineer.
Livingston attended Yale University where he received a B.A. degree in Theatre Studies and English Literature. The young actor soon relocated to Chicago and became involved in the city's thriving theater scene. His first film role was in 1992, in Dolly Parton's Straight Talk. Following a move to Los Angeles, Livingston took on supporting roles in Some Folks Call it a Sling Blade and The Low Life, Livingston landed his first role in a major film, 1996's Swingers. He may be best known for the lead role in the cult-hit comedy Office Space, co-starring Jennifer Aniston and written and directed by Mike Judge. Director Paul W.S. Anderson had wanted him to play the role of Goro in 1995's "Mortal Kombat," but the prosthetics to enhance his height and add two arms was too expensive to justify. Going beyond nice guy roles, Livingston decorated his filmography with memorable supporting parts such as a shark-like Hollywood agent in Adaptation (2002) (which is loosely based on screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's agent), a weasally Ivy League upstart to Alec Baldwin's casino boss in The Cooler (2003) and an unfortunate English teacher in Pretty Persuasion (2005).
Livingston is currently with a partner. His younger brother, John Livingston, is also an actor and sister Jennifer Livingston is a TV news personality at WKBT in LaCrosse, WI
Livingston also plays on the World Poker Tour in the Hollywood Home games for the Accion International charity.
