Mariangela "Mary" Demurtas (born November 4, 1981) is an Italian contralto singer and musician. Better known as the current lead vocalist for the gothic metal band Tristania.

Early Life

Mary's musical career started in 2000 while attending the School of Foreign Linguistics and Literature in Sassari, Sardinia. Her initial musical experience was limited to occasional appearances at local festivals in Sardinia.

Career

With her musical background rooted in amongst others soul and blues, Mariangela joined an amateur blues band in 2000, together with a talented guitar player who today is considered one of the new promises in the international blues scene, the italian Francesco Piu. Honing her craft in the local blues scene for a couple of years, Mariangela decided to join the Sassari-based metalband Reel Fiction in 2002, with which she entered the studio in 2003 to record a four track demo entitled "Transfer". The entire demo was produced by current guitarist of Helloween, Sasha Gerstner, in a studio near the city of Bamberg in Germany.

In 2005, Mary and Reel Fiction decided to part ways. She left for Milan where she performed for a short period of time with another band from Northern Italy, called Alight. While in Milan, she also worked as a VJ for the Italian Rock TV on an amateur basis, interviewing bands like Europe and Blackfield.

In Spring 2007, around the time when Vibeke Stene left Tristania, was looking for a singer. Mariangela sent a demo to Tristania. In August 2007 she was announced as the new official singer of Tristania. After only three months in Norway, Mariangela began working with local cultural associations to teaching about singing and interpretation, besides volunteering for organizations and sponsoring events and concerts at a local level.

In November 2009, she presented her first musical workshop in the city of Stavanger, entitled “Music as a language”, which primarily focuses on the affinity between music and language, and the importance of music as a tool of collaboration and understanding between musicians. This project was entirely funded by local cultural associations in Stavanger, with the extraordinary participation and collaboration of Hanne Sørvaag (Universal Sweden), an established Norwegian singer-songwriter in the international music scene.

Over the last couple of years Mariangela collaborated with well-known musicians such as Danny Cavanagh (Anathema) and Rob Caggiano (Anthrax) and internationally acknowledged producers such as Waldemar Sorychta and Sasha Gerstner (Helloween).
