A booby prize is a joke prize, usually given in recognition of a terrible performance or a last-place finish. For instance, if there was a contest and a person scored last, he may get a joke prize such as a worthless coin. Booby prizes are sometimes coveted as an object of pride and humor. The etymology references a foolish person or booby (e.g. booby trap).

Example: Bob won the booby prize in the NCAA tournament pool after his choices made a hasty exit.
