A stallion is an ungelded male horse after reaching the age of sexual maturity, usually between two and three years of age who can be used for breeding.
Temperament
Though useful for stud, a stallion can be very snappish and nasty, which gives him a reputation as untrustworthy. You can never completely trust a stallion because their natural instincts make them unpredictable.
Stallions are generally more "fiery" than the average mare, and may have a competitive edge. They are especially popular for upper level dressage work, as well as show jumping. Stallions are rarely seen at the upper levels of eventing.
Due to their nature, stallions should be handled and ridden by experienced horsepeople, as a novice rider is usually not sensitive or controlled enough to ride one, and inexperienced handlers could be harmed or overpowered.
