It was much later; almost 11 long years that he began his career with Holi (in the year 1984) and it was with the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (in the year 1988) that Aamir tasted his 1st ever commercial success. In the year 1989, Aamir received the first ever National Film Award (that’s a Special Jury honor), thanks to the character he played in the movie Raakh.
It was the film Raha Hindustani in the year 1996 that Aamir won the best actor award (Filmfare Award) which was followed by his second award (an Academy Award-nomination) for the best actor which he owed to the film Lagaan. An extended 4 year break followed where Aamir did not take up any acting assignments, and it was Mangal Pandey: The Rising (in the year 2005), a historical role which became Aamir khan’s comeback! He won another Best Actor award (Filmfare Critics) for his skills in the film Rang De Basanti (in the year 2006). Career
Actor
Aamir Khan debuted as a child actor, in 1973, in Nasir Hussain’s film Yaadon Ki Baarat. His first performance as an adult actor was for the 1984 film Holi, but Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak is considered to be his first commercial success. The film effectively launched Khan’s career as an actor, thanks to his much-publicized “chocolate boy” looks. It was in the same year that he received his first National Film Award for his performance in the film Raakh. This success was followed by successful films that released in the late eighties and early nineties that include Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Rangeela. Aamir Khan, quite unusually, acts in one or two films in a year. The1996 film Raja Hindustani released and turned out to be a blockbuster. In the following years, Khan’s films didn’t fare particularly well and it was only with the 1997 film Ishq that he once again began to see success in the movie market. The 1998 film Ghulam saw him turn into a playback singer with the song, “Aye, kya bolti tu?” Sarfarosh and Earth were quite successful.
His 2000 release, Mela, was a flop.
In 2001, Aamir Khan acted in Lagaan, the maiden production of the Aamir khan Productions. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Award in 74th Academy Awards. He won his second Filmfare for this film. The year also saw the release of the extremely successful film Dil Chahta Hai. He then took a four-year-long hiatus and came back with Mangal Pandey: The Rising and Rang De Basanti . A year later, he made his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par And in 2008, he followed up with Ghajini and with 3 Idiots in 2009, both of which were hits. Talaash and Dhoom 3 are his upcoming projects.
Producer
In 2001 Khan set up a production company known as Aamir Khan Productions. Its first film was Lagaan. The movie was released in 2001, starring Khan as the lead actor. The film was selected as India's official entry to the 74th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. It was eventually chosen and nominated in that category but lost to No Man's Land. The film won numerous awards at several Indian award functions such as Filmfare and IIFA, and won the National Film Award for Most Popular Film, an award shared between Khan and the film's director, Ashutosh Gowariker. Khan later commented on the loss of Lagaan at the Oscars: "Certainly we were disappointed. But the thing that really kept us in our spirits was that the entire country was behind us".
In 2007 he produced the drama Taare Zameen Par which marked his directorial debut. Khan also played a supporting role in the film, sharing the screen with the debut of child actor Darsheel Safary. The film was initially conceived of and developed by the husband and wife team, Amole Gupte and Deepa Bhatia. It was a story of a young child who suffers in school until a teacher identifies him as dyslexic. The movie was critically acclaimed, as well as a box office success. Taare Zameen Par won the 2008 Filmfare Best Movie Award as well as a number of other Filmfare and Star Screen Awards. Khan's work won him two awards at the Filmfare, the Best Movie and the Best Director awards, which established his status as a competent filmmaker in Bollywood.
In 2008, Khan launched his nephew Imran Khan's debut in the film Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na under his production house. The film was a big hit in India, and eventually earned Khan another nomination for Best Movie at the Filmfare.

The show went live simultaneously on Star Plus, Star World and national broadcaster Doordarshan on the 11 A.M. Sunday slot in eight languages, being the first ever show to do so in India. The show opened to highly positive reviews and feedback from various eminent personalities such as social activists, media houses, doctors, film and television personalities, and Khan was praised for his effort, describing the show as a movement. In her review, Ritu Singh of IBN Live stated that, "Aamir Khan deserves an applause for bringing up such a sensitive issue and presenting it in a hard hitting way. The amount of research Aamir and his team has put into the show was clearly visible with the facts and figures presented. Every aspect of the issue was covered with great diligence."
