Dual Survival is an American reality cable television series aired on the Discovery Channel. The show features a pair of survival experts in challenging environments.
For the first two seasons the show featured the differing outdoor survival philosophies and skills of Cody Lundin, a naturalist and primitive-skills expert who runs the Aboriginal Living Skills School in Arizona and Dave Canterbury, a military trained survival instructor who runs the Pathfinder Training School in Ohio.
Production
Dual Survival's first and second seasons originally aired in 2010 and 2011, respectively. A third season is currently under production.
Format
In Dual Survival's first two seasons, each episode features Cody and Dave in a different survival situation like being marooned on a deserted island, lost in a forbidding jungle, or stranded in an arid desert. They then have to survive for a number of days with minimal gear. Along the way, Cody and Dave demonstrate various survival skills such as using primitive methods to make fire and obtaining potable water.
Conflict often arises due to the differences between Cody and Dave's individual survival philosophies and methods. Cody, who does not wear shoes or long pants, sometimes slows down the team when they are navigating through particularly tough terrain. Additionally, Dave sometimes goes after dangerous animals for food that Cody would rather avoid, while Cody prefers to gather edibles that Dave has far less interest in eating.
Cast change
In June 2012, Cody Lundin issued a press release stating that Canterbury was no longer a part of Dual Survival:
"The goal of the survival instructor is to keep people alive. To accomplish this goal, honesty, integrity, trust and competence must come first. These core values cannot be compromised or people’s lives are needlessly put at risk. In a profession where human lives are at stake, dishonesty about ones background and experience is an inexcusable breach of trust."
In 2012, Lundin announced an unnamed new co-host was cast that, "...is a person who has not been on TV before. He has a pedigree in Special Operations, (20 years) and is an expert in unconventional warfare. Discovery has vetted him, I have vetted him, and I have looked through his credentials, a folder one inch thick with diplomas, awards, schools, etc.... bad Mo Fo who has done great service for our country."
