Scott Wiener (born May 11, 1970) is an American politician currently serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors representing District 8, consisting of The Castro, Diamond Heights, Duboce Triangle, Eureka Valley, Glen Park, and Noe Valley. Wiener serves on the Board of Supervisors Land Use and Economic Committee, and the Budget and Finance Subcommittee.

Early Career

Prior to his election to the Board of Supervisors, he served as an attorney under San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera. He previously served as chair of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee, president of his neighborhood association, co-chair of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, and co-chair of the San Francisco LGBT Community Center.

Board of Supervisors

In November 2010, Wiener was elected to represent District 8 on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors . As a member of the Board of Supervisors, Wiener has focused on housing, transportation, and small business issues.

Wiener's legislation at the Board has included the following:

  • Creating a temporary rental category for tenants who are displaced from their apartments because of a fire or other disaster and who need affordable temporary rental units while their apartments are being repaired.
  • Modernizing San Francisco’s approach to historic preservation controls.
  • Providing minimum qualifications and rules of conduct for professional dogwalkers who conduct their businesses in city parks.
  • Closing loopholes in San Francisco’s prevailing wage ordinance for low-paid workers like janitors.
  • Creating a sentencing commission to rationalize San Francisco’s approach to sentencing and to avoid jail over-crowding.

In September 2011, nudists gathered to protest a proposed law that would put some restrictions on public nudity in San Francisco. The law would prevent nudity in restaurants and require naked people to sit on a towel or other covering, when sitting on benches or other public seats. Wiener made national news headlines when he introduced the law in response to an increase of complaints of nudity in public places and restaurants.
