Sponge is a post-grunge rock band from Detroit, Michigan. The band was formed in 1991 by members Vinnie Dombrowski, Mike Cross, and Joey Mazzola, all former members of the hard-rock band, Loudhouse. Sponge were signed to Sony Records in 1993. In the late 80's/early 90's there was also a band in Dublin, Ireland called Sponge.

The band's debut album, Rotting Piñata, was a minor hit and received heavy play on radio and MTV. The two biggest singles from that album are "Plowed" and "Molly (Sixteen Candles)." The band scored another hit on their next album, Wax Ecstatic, with the title track. Other singles off the album include "Have You Seen Mary" and Silence is Their Drug."

New Pop Sunday, the third album, was a departure from the grittier sound of the first two albums, featuring songs that were unmistakenably pop rock in nature. The band's popularity waned sharply during this period, probably due to the delay in the release of the album and to the change in sound. Nevertheless, the album is highly regarded among fans.
