- Shahrukh Khan as Samar
- Khan will be presented in two very versatile roles, one in his late twenties resembling that of his earlier performance Raj from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and the other at a more mature age as an introverted, composed, and dutiful army officer in Kashmir.
- Katrina Kaif as Meera
- Prior to the film's release, Kaif's role was described as "the archetypal Yash Chopra seductress, an unattainable beauty." She was reported to have put in a significant amount of work to make her character believable, and was helped by Khan, who had prior experience with the director. Kaif faced difficulty at times while filming in London due to the cold weather.

- Anushka Sharma as Akira
- Anushka Sharma was reported to have been portraying the second female lead in the film. In an interview with a leading daily journal, Anushka stated, "I play a girl by the name Akira. She is a 21 year old who wants to work for the Discovery Channel and make documentaries. She is extremely ambitious and would do anything to make it big and realize her dreams." It was initially rumored that Sharma would be seen in an extended cameo appearance but this was refuted by the actress in the interview.
- Anupam Kher as Meera's Father
- Kaif's father in the film. He stated in an interview that his role in the film was a cameo appearance.
