Women in Chad are the mainstay of its predominantly rural-based economy and they outnumber the men.
Female genital mutilation
According to a United Nations report of 1995, 60 percent of Chadian women had been subject to female genital mutilation. The report notes that these procedures are "deeply rooted in tradition" and are " usually performed on girls as a part rite of passage into womanhood" It is equally common amongst Muslims, Christians and "animists". Adult women generally are not exposed to this procedure..
Gender Gap Report
In 2012, the World Economic Forum ranked Chad among the worst regions in their Global Gender Gap Report.
