Re: Style matters

Thanx for your advice. Actually for writing a scientific paper or report "Sequence Stratigraphy" is always written in this manner. So I corrected that one in the wikipedia. If it is according to some decision I will not do it any more.Urbashi (talk) 04:40, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

Wikileaks

I am always surprised how much code can ref cleanup generate. Editing of long articles is problematic, at least in Firefox, I've long ago resigned myself to editing sections at a time. I hope eventually wiki code will be more optimized, but this is also a browser problem (Chrome seems to lag much less than Firefox while editing large articles, for example, and my addons such as wikied do account for additional slowness... but I digress). Overall I think that the extra code is worth it, the article will now look much more friendly in the edit mode; less code means a step closer to WYSIWYG, and I fixed the red link, thanks for catching that (or, I ec with a bot which fixed that too). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:22, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

/grumble/ I am just mildly annoyed another experienced editor didn't bother to extend the courtesy of notifying me on talk of their mass revert. Sigh. /grumble/ Anyway, I will start a bunch of talk discussions, per BRD. Already did one on Talk:Blog. I don't think that 10% code increase is significant (let's say, 10% increase of load time - what, .1 - .5 seconds?), compared to the much more friendly looking (code-light) text that loads. Of course, if everybody and their dog will disagree, oh well, it's not an issue I intend to lose much sleep over. I just wish people tried to be more friendly; incidents like this are why some people burn out and leave. (No, not me, I've been through much worse - but I am just a hopeless addict :D). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:54, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Here is the "original source. (http://mdn.mainichi.co.jp/waiwai/0201/020106moms.html)

You can read the full text here (http://rense.com/general19/down.htm)

As you can see, the source (Mainichi Daily News) for this ranks right up there with some of the goofier tabloids available in the US and UK.

Seems to have originated as a tabloid-style sensationalist report in Japan about the "overworked high-school-student with obsessive parents" phenom (Some idiots saying: "anything to help him make the high exam score!"). This is not normal in Japan.

Is it true that it is not an uncommon practice for Japanese mothers to manually masturbate their sons' penises to help them fall asleep at night?

It's like reading an article about America which says: "It is not unknown, in America, when a son reaches 13, for the father to masturbate and ejaculate in the son's ear. There are occasional reports that the son's ear is then licked clean by his mother."

Due to his lack of balanced reporting I can only infer that the author is less concerned with the broad and long-term significance of this issue than with its sensationalist and perhaps jingoist potential. Passportal (talk) 12:53, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

WaiWai controversy and cancellation The Mainichi Daily News column WaiWai, by Australian journalist Ryann Connell, featured often-sensationalist stories, principally translated from and based on articles appearing in Japanese tabloids. The column carried a disclaimer since September 19, 2002: "WaiWai stories are transcriptions of articles that originally appeared in Japanese language publications. The Mainichi Daily News cannot be held responsible for the content of the original articles, nor does it guarantee their accuracy. Views expressed in the WaiWai column are not necessarily those held by the Mainichi Daily News or the Mainichi Newspapers Co."

In April and May 2008, an aggressive anti-WaiWai campaign appeared on internet forums including 2channel. Criticism included "contents are too vulgar" and "the stories could cause Japanese people to be misunderstood abroad."

The Mainichi editorial board responded by deleting controversial WaiWai articles and limiting archive access, but the column remained in the Sunday Mainichi. Citing continuing criticism, Mainichi's Digital Media Division shut down WaiWai on June 21. Mainichi also announced it would "severely punish the head of the Digital Media Division, which is responsible for overseeing the site, the manager responsible for the column and the editor involved with the stories." On June 25, Mainichi apologized to MDN readers.

Some advertisers responded to the campaign by pulling ads from Mainichi's Japanese site.

On June 28, 2008, Mainichi announced punitive measures. Connell, who remained anonymous in the announcement, was suspended for three months ("issuing three months' disciplinary leave"). The other involved Mainichi personnel, Yutaka Asahina, Managing Director and Digital Media Division Executive Supervisor; Atsushi Hasegawa, General Manager of the Digital Media Division; Akihiko Isono, Deputy General Manager of the Digital Media Division; and Hiroshi Takahashi, Managing Editor, were either docked 10%–20% salary or "stripped of their titles" for a period of one or two months.

On July 20, 2008, Mainichi released the results of an in-house investigation. Mainichi announced that it would re-organize the MDN Editorial Department on August 1 with a new chief editor, and would re-launch the MDN on September 1 as a more news-oriented site.

Mainichi said, "We continued to post articles that contained incorrect information about Japan and indecent sexual content. These articles, many of which were not checked, should not have been dispatched to Japan or the world. We apologize deeply for causing many people trouble and for betraying the public's trust in the Mainichi Shimbun."

"Sexual tourism" on the article "Morocco"

Hello,

Your opinion about the insertion of a long section about "Sexual tourism" on the article "Morocco" would be highly appreciated since you are among the main contributors to the concerned page.

A discussion is ongoing on the Talk page of the article "Morocco".

Local /16 range block

Hi Materialscientist, I came across a /16 range block of yours of yours. Just looking at the range contribs and a Whois, it seems that the block is stopping a fair chunk of India from editing. Would it be possible to lift or target the vandal IPs more specifically? Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 03:10, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

The block was triggered by a long-term maniac who rapidly hops over a roughly /8 range (which is quite small for this region). His last IP was 117.199.98.58. While we can't rangeblock him, /16 blocks stop his hopping for a while. I did have a close look at this range before blocking. It was clear that there are many other contributors, but I found the fast majority of them uncontructive (often incompetence rather than intentional vandalism). I have no hard feeling here at all and am fine to discuss/lift the block, but please review the edits, statistically, if you wish to lift the block. Materialscientist (talk) 03:20, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Just to clear something up, I'm not an admin so I can't lift the block myself. Also a little bit of background User:DeltaQuad suggested talking to you about the rangeblock after he did a CheckUser (just given the number IPs using the range).
I was looking at the range contribs in more details and it reminded me of an SPI I saw recently. Ring any bells for you, how long term have you been following this person? Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 03:45, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
I picked him up at some stage at WP:AIV and later in June 2012 set up a filter (#478 - sorry if you can't see it, for obvious reasons the filter is not public). There are two problems: (i) he mixes up nonsense with edits that look like article cleanup; (ii) he connects through a vast internet provider in India - his (partial) ranges are 116.0.0.0/8, 117.0.0.0/8, 14.96.0.0/14, and 180.215.0.0/16. Once he is active he boldly reverts and hops until rangeblocked; his topical range is rather wide and is certainly not limited to India. He is more of a philosopher than a techno-kid. All that said, I don't think he is Abhay Gupta Indian. Materialscientist (talk) 04:24, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Yeah it sounds like he's a 'cleaver' and persistent vandal, but not related to the SPI. In any case it sounds like the rangeblock is necessary, sorry for the distraction. Regards, Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 04:28, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Agneepath, again

And again, the same sock is adding a random blog to the Agneepath article. User:Ding Dong the Wicked Witch is Dead

You blocked him/her before I could report him/her. Two things: (1) those edits are blatantly disruptive, should their record be deleted through RD2 or RD3? (2) it appears this user is the same person as WinkaDinka (talk · contribs), based on the content and pages edited. Should we flush out any sleepers? I feel it may be silly to start a sockpuppetry investigation on two blocked accounts.

Thanks. – Muboshgu (talk) 03:16, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Sockpuppetry investigations are slow and good when other resources are exhausted; straightforward vandals like this one are easier to block on the spot, socks or not.
Those edits can be revdeleted. I often don't do that because of my high sensitivity threshold (maybe because I see too many of those daily). Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 03:21, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Comparison of the AK-47 and M16

I request that you review the happenings on the Comparison of the AK-47 and M16. There is a user who is suppressing manufacture technical specifications simply because he disagrees with them. Yet another one, sorry. You have no idea how many times I've gone to block an AIV report only to find that you've beaten me to it. It's annoying, I don't know how you do it, why you do it, or what's wrong with you. In any case, keep up the great work. Or, on second thought, slow down on the great work. Link to picture

Hi Materialscientist. I've added a few minutes ago the logo of Médecins Sans Frontières's on this page and you undid my edit saying it is non-free image. I don't know the rules very well on WP, but I thought logos (even the non-free ones) were accepted under the law of fair-use. So there are 2 choices : it is not allowed and the image should be deleted from Misplaced Pages (as it is also used on that page), or it is allowed and the image should be put back on. -- Jojva (talk) 23:58, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Oh God I'm sick of this. And then Misplaced Pages whines about losing contributors... You have to be both a programmer (which I am) and a lawyer to edit an article ! The image had an encyclopedic purpose and therefore a justification (otherwise there wouldn't be any picture at all in the list). Anyway, I read the page about fair-use and I can't be sure exactly what rule it violates in the 10 parts policy of Non-free content. I guess 3.a. Minimal usage, or 8. Contextual significance ? Sorry for my anger, I know guys like you do an amazing job, but it's just annoying to take some time to improve things around here and watch it disappear. -- Jojva (talk) 00:55, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Template talk:2010-2019VSFashion Show

Why did you G11 Template talk:2010-2019VSFashion Show. It should serve the same purpose as Template talk:2000-2009VSFashion Show. Only promotional content on the page should be removed. Content that serves administrative/encyclopedic purposes should be kept.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:57, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

It was one of 100+ advert pages newly created by a spamming IP, not an old page. Not to spam the recent changes log, I've deleted them as G11 instead of blanking. Materialscientist (talk) 22:06, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
I assume you did so without prejudice of me creating something like Template talk:2000-2009VSFashion Show over the new redlink.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 01:31, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
Sure. Unless admins clearly say "don't recreate anything here" and justify it, it is fine to recreate nearly any (non-offending) page. Materialscientist (talk) 01:42, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

New Editor

I find it highly odd that a new editor here would start with their first edit making extensive changes to The Boys of Summer the very same day after the troublesome IP was blocked again. I am inexperienced in sockpuppet investigations and block evasion, but thought this should be brought to the attention of an interested admin.--Wlmg (talk) 00:15, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

I use Canadian English, and that's what I had tried to stick to in the article when I wrote it. I'll need to check carefully for inconsistencies, though. Are there any specific examples you've noticed where spellings get mixed up? 01:04, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

How should I handle this?

Eflatmajor7th (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) Has removed large sections of Auditory system, Gustatory system, and Sensory system giving a promise to fix it later in the talk pages. I think my brain is full. Jim1138 (talk) 03:17, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

This is misleading. I removed additions made within the last 48 hours to all three of those articles, all of which additions were very similar. They were made by Jim1138 and Steamboat Jim. All of the reasons I removed the content are discussed on the respective talk pages of the three articles. The main reason is that both users, presumably the same person or group, were referencing non-peer-reviewed sources as the basis for dramatic changes in the articles. Mostly, the source the users tried to use was http://neuronresearch.net/ which is an original research website mostly written by James T. Fulton. Eflatmajor7th (talk) 04:28, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Full Protection of User Page

Hi Materialscientist! I was wondering why you fully protected your user page (without giving a reason) when there was only two counts of vandalism, both from non-autoconfirmed/ip users. What if categories had to be updated? And isn't protection not used pre-emptively? Thank you! Vacation 06:36, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

You see only partial history. There were only two suggestions to update that page in its entire history, which went very easily and smoothly via my talk. There was no single attempt or request for category updates, though many editors/bots with admin privileges could do that. Meanwhile, there were countless unfriendly edits of my talk page, which is normally not protected at all. Thus this userpage protection is just a practical and personal decision. Materialscientist (talk) 07:40, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
I understand. However, by this premise, shouldn't every autoconfirmed user's page be semi protected? Vacation 18:56, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Hey MS, hope you had a good Turkey Day. Got an issue with an anon user and since my last attempt at dealing with an anon blew up like a nuclear bomb, I was wondering if you could take a look. 129.171.233.76

I noticed you have 129.171.233.76 blocked for 20 months. I am in no way affiliated with that IP, but it appears that it is part of a pool of ten IPs registered to the University of Miami, where users probably hop around like with the old AOL proxies. That said, if you feel that users there should be blocked, you should probably schoolblock all ten of those IPs, starting with 129.171.233.71 and ending with 129.171.233.79. PCHS-NJROTC 21:04, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Why 10? Whois shows the pool is at least /16 range (or possibly wider). Vandalism rate is very different for these IPs. Materialscientist (talk) 23:49, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
Hmm. I say ten because there's 10 natXXX.wireless.miami.edu IPs that I'm seeing (I could always be missing something), and while the University of Miami probably has the whole /16 range, some IPs may be used for different purposes. I have the contributions pulled up for the whole /16 range, and there's a lot of IPs making only a few edits (regardless of the nature of the edits), while those 10 (129.171.233.71 - 129.171.233.79) have many edits, which leads me to believe those are shared, and an educated guess tells me users probably hop around on those IPs like with AOL or the many K-12 school districts that have more than one IP (the one's that have all traffic piped through a cluster of IPs, not the one's that have more than one IP each representing different schools). Of course, I could always be wrong. The 10 IPs probably represent a shared pipe for wi-fi users (hence the "wireless" in their rDNS), while a lot of the other IPs probably represent one person (although are probably dynamic). Ultimately it's up to you though, it's your block, I'm just trying to help. PCHS-NJROTC 01:55, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Hey, out of curiosity, why do you use anonblock for universities, rather than schoolblock? It seems to me that the part of the schoolblock template about editing being required for class projects would very much pertain to university students. Plus it shows the vandals how childish they are, acting like school children. Not that it matters. PCHS-NJROTC 02:15, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
There are many ways to manage a university IP subsystem, but I've never seen rapid hopping (maybe except for some Asian universities). You can explore the Miami Uni DNS by clicking through here and tweaking numbers in DNS. I don't see much difference between anonblock and schoolblock and often choose anonblock when I have not checked the IP origin. Materialscientist (talk) 03:18, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Well, I know a bit about IPs, but you probably know more than I. I do know when I was in high school the system was weird; it would rapid hop between three IPs belonging to three different ISPs on completely different ranges (and it seemed, based on the contribs and the block log, to confuse the Wikipedian administrators), and I know AOL does something like that. Those 10 IPs I was talking about definitely look like NATs, in my opinion anyway, but even that doesn't necessarily mean they rapid hop. Probably for the better to use anonblock unless you know for sure it's a school/university/library, schoolblock on something like a factory or a store chain would look silly. PCHS-NJROTC 03:48, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
As an added note, I do know a university in the United Kingdom was rapid hopping because someone in its network went on a vandalism spree on Conservapedia, and that user's account used a different IP in the same range for every edit. PCHS-NJROTC 03:52, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Titanium dioxide

Hey, as regard your removal of info inserted by User:150.203.35.193 in the Titanium dioxide article , didn't you feel like following WP:PRESERVE considering that their edit was backed by high-quality sources complaint with WP:SRC?

Sorry, I don't understand the question. Their source is from a good journal (Phys Rev), but it is a theoretical work, which fails to explain the experiment. The source that I gave in my edit summary (and others) use this Phys Rev result simply as an indication that the calculation method has problems. Hydrogen Wavefunction - Normalization constant

Hello there! I made the changes in the normalisation constant of the wavefunction of the Hydrogen Atom. Are entirely certain that there is a ^3 in the denominator and not only (n-l) without power of 3? Because, if you compare it to the wikipedia page "Hydrogen-like" atoms, there is no power of 3 there and it should be the same wavefunction, except for some Zs in there somewhere, shouldn't it? I also double checked it with one of my physics books and though the general formular is not stated, the explicit results for n=2 show, that there is no power of 3.

Or are there different ways to define the Laguerre Polynomials, because in this case, there could be this expression to the power of 2 hidden inside the Laguerre polynomials. But I don't really think so. So, maybe double check this, cause it seems wrong?!

Could you reply here, cause I don't have a wiki account myself... Greets, Alex (Vienna) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.131.52.145 (talk) 14:15, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

External link removed

Hi Materialscientist. I noticed that you removed my external link The Top Points To Consider When Selecting A Binary Options Trading Platform from http://en.wikipedia.org/Binary_options_trading_platform. I understand the guidelines but I am not aware of any that have been broken, can you please enlighten me. The content was written specifically with Misplaced Pages in mind and provides a vast amount of high quality past, current and up coming information, with details of an announcement from the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission. It is clearly on my blog, but there is no attempt at selling any affiliate product, service etc whatsoever. Even advertisements throughout the main blog are very minimal. I feel strongly that the content I added provides a lot of value to the Misplaced Pages page in question, expanding and clarifying the existing content on the page in a positive way. I therefore ask you to reconsider removing it. Bftkt (talk) 08:49, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

You can ask Makecat (talk · contribs) who actually removed your link from that article. From my side, I would say that such links are always problematic on Misplaced Pages because we are overly sensitive to using it for commercial interests. Also, blogs are often removed simply because most of them are not reliable sources of information, and are used to promote a certain point of view. We aim for neutral, secondary, academic sources as much as possible. Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 09:04, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Why did you not block the IP vandal?

I filed a report at Misplaced Pages: Administrator intervention against vandalism regarding persistent vandalism carried out by the IP address range "220.255.1.xx" on the page Girls' Generation-TTS. "xx" refers to different IP addresses. His/Her IP address kept changing at an astonishing rate, thus I used "xx". However, I see my report deleted and no action done. May I know what is happening? Cheers, Hop n hop (on the arctic ice) 09:34, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

As I mentioned in my edit summary, I've rangeblocked them (we remove blocked IPs/users from WP:AIV board). Materialscientist (talk) 09:54, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Materialscientist. I understand your reason for the decline of protection for this article, but now we have this. I do not believe this is a sock of the registered user due to the exchange at User talk:93.183.136.70. Recurring vandalism from an IP range

Hi, Materialscientist. There's an ongoing problem with vandalism at Alice in Wonderland (1951 film). Every time semi-protection expires, the same sort of edits begin anew, and this has been going on for at least 11 months. I'm quite sure it's the same person, but the IP (beginning with 173.58) does shift frequently enough that blocking would be as short-term a solution as semi. I wonder if you could assess this to see if a range block would be possible. Any advice would be appreciated. Rivertorch (talk) 07:37, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Calcium carbide crystal structure

Hi Materialscientist, during the adoption of the chembox information from calcium carbide into the Hungarian article I took a look at the reference for the crystal structure (), and it seems to refer to barium peroxide. Looking at the page history it seems this ref has been added by you (see diff link). I could not find any reference to calcium carbide in the article, maybe you can explain why this is considered relevant for CaC2. I ran a quick search with google and have found some hint that it actually shows polymorphism, though there is indeed a tetragonal form (here, I do not have access to the full article). Thanks! Szaszicska (talk) 10:22, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Our institutional database has only one structure for BaO2 (tI6, space group I4/mmm, No. 139); this structure is identical to the tetragonal form of CaC2. Our database typically gives several references for every structure, and I can copy them to you and explain further details. The database does not give the most stable form: for example, for CaC2 it lists 4 phases. This problem can sometimes be solved by reading the articles and other sources. The edit summaries apparently reflect this person's opinion that the article should be a stub and should not contain information about the work's productions. Flami, Dawn Bard, Theroadislong and I (and others?) have all tried to explain on the IPs' talk pages and in edit summaries (and on the article's talk page) that the productions history section is a necessary part of musical theatre articles. I directed him to our article structure page at WP:MUSICALS and suggested that he look at Carousel (musical) for an example of a FA-quality article on a musical. I suggested that while the Lead section contains a brief overview of the information, more detailed information should be given below. Creating socks in order to edit war at the article is a bad way to get started at Misplaced Pages, I think. -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:07, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

eric bruskotter aka major league personal bio add.

hi materailscietenist, sorry before I believed i added the imdb links but i will add them here to show you and in the apge there. But i dont know how to properly put them as a source refernce on his page at the bottom. Anyways, here is the source links: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0707432/ this episode entitled kyle whitaker's got two sacks, in this episode they mentioned that one of the main characters dana whitaker's brother is an NFL player for a cleveland team and is suspended for steroids at the end of the episode. in this episode link below: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0707455/ entitled the reunion (correct name, will expalin in a second) is where eric bruskotter makes the physical guest appearance as kyle whitaker. they obviously chose the cleveland background because of his history in the major league. The sports ngiht progrma was created adn produced by aaron sorkin. Now on certain online versions of viewing of this old tv show (netflics and itunes store) they mislabel this episode and place it as the cut man cometh. However, the correct title of the episode he appear in as it states on imdb is this one the reunion (in the cut man cometh episode that revolves around the staff trying to deal with a cut man announcer and one of the worlds shortest boxing matches that ended in similar way of the recent box matched aired on pay per view networks. ```` 207.112.47.26 (talk) 02:17, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

In regard to the Misplaced Pages article about airlines mergers and acqusitions

Hello in regard to this article : airlines mergers and acqusitions (http://en.wikipedia.org/List_of_airline_mergers_and_acquisitions), It would be nice if you could put back on the addition to the article. IBERIA and BRITISH AIRWAYS is one of the most important merges in recent airlines history, prior to Lan and Tam merge (Latam airlines.) British Airways and Iberia signed the deal in April 2010. here are to articles citing the news. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8608667.stm , http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/97b37f44-3f9b-11e2-b0ce-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2FLF7EnDw , proving the airlines did and are still together. thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dergaffer (talkcontribs) 20:23, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Forget something?

Shouldn't this have hidden the reverted edits? LeadSongDog come howl! 20:41, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Please clarify. Do you mean revision deletion? This was a year ago. Materialscientist (talk) 21:54, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Some things shouldn't be easily available in the history, right? I don't think elapsed time matters. LeadSongDog come howl! 22:58, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Block evasion

Hi. A couple of days ago you answered my request at AIV with a block of User:76.124.160.247 for "dubious, unexplained, unsourced changes to articles". Now, the editor is back with an account, User:Wardwhirlboromarlpool55, evading the block and making the same edits. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:45, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

And edit warring to keep them in, undoing the reversions of myself and another editor. Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:05, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
I saw this note and I have blocked User talk:Wardwhirlboromarlpool55 for evasion. EdJohnston (talk) 02:14, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I was away and was going through backlog lists. Materialscientist (talk) 02:16, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick action! Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:18, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
