Gyula Tornai
Biography
Hungarian painter Görgő, 1851 - Budapest, 1928
Gyula Tornai studied in Vienna, Munich and in Benczúr's master school in Budapest. He painted genres (Delicious Dish, La Dame aux Camélias), and after his long travels (Italy, Spain, Algeria, Morocco, India, Japan) his topc changed to exotic themes. Odalisques, eunuchs, Saracens are in his pictures with every deatails. His art which was an imitation of Gyula Benczúr's style was popular in its time. Most of his works are now in the Hungarian National Gallery.
In 1907 he had exhibitions in Paris and London, in the Budapest Art Gallery in 1909, in the National Salon in 1917. The Auction Mart organised an exhibition of his heritage in 1929.
