A Special Mission Unit (SMU), in the United States Armed Forces, is a Tier-One United States Special Operations Command asset. Under the control of the Joint Special Operations Command, they are specially selected and designated units which are tasked with "special missions", sometimes referring to unconventional warfare, counter-terrorist activities, direct action, and/or black operations.
Four Special Mission Units (SMUs) have been identified by the media, although not always officially acknowledged by the US government or US military:
- 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), or Delta Force, of the United States Army
- Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), or SEAL Team Six, of the United States Navy
- 24th Special Tactics Squadron (24th STS) of the United States Air Force
- Intelligence Support Activity (ISA) of the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command
The term Tier 1 can also be used to refer to other units with similar capabilities from other nations, for example the British SAS, Australian SASR and also Canadian JTF2.
