In the United States, the phrase Kennedy family commonly refers to the family descending from the marriage of the Irish-AmericansJoseph P. Kennedy, Sr. and Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald that was prominent in American politics and government. Their political involvement has revolved around the Democratic Party. Harvard University educations have been common among them, and they have contributed heavily to that university's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The wealth, glamor, and photogenic quality of the family members, as well as their extensive and continuing involvement in public service, has elevated them to iconic status over the past half-century, with the Kennedys sometimes referred to as 'America's Royal Family'.
Soon after the 1960 election of U.S. PresidentJohn F. Kennedy, he and his younger brothers, Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy, all held prominent positions in the federal government. They received intense publicity, often emphasizing their relative youth, allure, education, and future in politics. From 1947, when John F. Kennedy became a member of Congress, to 2011, when Patrick J. Kennedy departed Congress, there were 64 years with a Kennedy in elective office in Washington (excluding a short gap of less than a month in between John F. Kennedy resigning his Senate seat prior to his inauguration as President). This spans more than a quarter of the nation's existence. There was only a brief hiatus following Patrick J. Kennedy's retirement from Congress in 2011, and the 2013 swearing in of Joseph P. Kennedy III.
James Kennedy, Sr. (1770–1835) was born in Dunganstown (Whitechurch, New Ross, County Wexford) in south-eastern Ireland, to John Kennedy I (1738–1803) and Bridget Shallow (1744–1774). He inherited a small farm from his father during the Penal Law times in Ireland. He and his wife Maria (c. 1779 – February 16, 1835) had the following children:

James Kennedy, Jr. (1816–1881), who married Catherine Colfer and was also a local farmer

Patrick Joseph "P. J." Kennedy (1858–1929), the first family patriarch, a first-generation Irish-American who married Mary Augusta Hickey (1857–1923), and had four children. He was a politician involved in the local Democratic Party.
Joseph Patrick "Joe" Kennedy, Jr. (1915–1944). Known as "Joe, Jr." He had been expected to become the family's political standard-bearer. Died during World War II when taking part in Operation Aphrodite as a pilot of a modified B-24 Liberator drone bomber which accidentally exploded and crashed over Blyth Estuary in Suffolk, England. For this act, he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. His body was never recovered.

Known to his family as "Jack" and sometimes referred to as "JFK", he was a U.S. Representative (1947–1953), a U.S. Senator (1953–1960) and the 35th U.S. President (1961–1963). In 1953, he married Jacqueline Lee "Jackie" Bouvier (1929–1994) and they had four children, one stillborn, one died soon after birth, and two survived to adulthood. He was assassinated on November 22, 1963 while riding in a presidential motorcade in Dallas, Texas.
Rose Marie "Rosemary" Kennedy (1918–2005). Known as "Rosemary" or "Rosie", she was rendered incapable of intelligible speech or caring for herself by a prefrontal lobotomy at age 23 – a new neurosurgical technique of the time and requested by her father – that was intended to cure her increasing mood swings and make her more manageable. The operation instead reduced her to an infantile state. From 1949, she lived in a residential care facility in Jefferson, Wisconsin until her death.
Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy, Sr. (1932–2009). Known as "Teddy" or "Ted", he served as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts (1962–2009). In 1958, he married Virginia Joan Bennett (born 1936) and they had three children; they divorced in 1981. In 1992, he married Victoria Anne "Vicki" Reggie (born 1954), in the process, gaining two stepchildren. On May 20, 2008, it was announced that he had a malignant brain tumor. In the next year, brain cancer severely limited his U.S. Senate appearances. He died on August 25, 2009.

Mark Kennedy Shriver (born 1964) – a former delegate in the Maryland General Assembly currently Vice President and Managing Director of US Programs for the charity Save the Children. Married Jeanne Eileen "Jeannie" Ripp; has three children.
Kathleen Hartington Kennedy (born 1951) – former Lt. Governor of Maryland, a candidate for Governor of Maryland. Married David Lee Townsend; has four daughters. Her second daughter Maeve Townsend had a son, Gideon McKean, on June 28, 2011, making him the first of the sixth generation.
Joseph Patrick Kennedy III (born 1952) – former U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. Runs the non-profit Citizens Energy Corp. in Boston. Divorced from Sheila Brewster Rauch; two sons. Married to Anne Elizabeth "Beth" Kelley.
Robert Francis Kennedy, Jr. (born 1954) – an environmentalist and political commentator, attorney and law professor at Pace University School of Law; best known for his many successful lawsuits to prevent water pollution, primarily in the New York area. Divorced from Emily Ruth Black; two children. Married (later separated but remained married until her death) to Mary Nancy Richardson; four children.
Mary Kerry Kennedy (born 1959) – human rights activist with the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. Divorced from New York Governor Andrew Mark Cuomo; has three daughters.
