Malik Haji Baz Gul Afridi or more commonly as Haji Baz Gul is a Pakistani politician from the Darra Adam Khel region of Pakistan. He served as the Member of National Assembly for the FATA region NA-34 from 1997 to 1999.
Background
Haji Baz Gul comes from an Afridi Pashtun family from the region of Darra Adam Khel in the federally-administrated tribal areas of Pakistan. He was born and grew up in his village of Sharif Khel in the tribal region and started a business in the gun trade of Darra.
In Darra, almost three-fourths of the people are in the gun trade and Baz Gul was keen to keep this tradition going and very soon managed to establish himself as one of the biggest and most respected arms dealer in the area. His business success was the subject of a special report written in the New York Times in 1988 and was also featured in the National Geographic magazine.
After his business success in Darra, He was keen to spread his business interests into other regions of Pakistan. He decided to enter politics by running as a candidate for the National Assembly of Pakistan during the Pakistan General Elections 1997 and was elected as MNA from NA-34 region of FATA.
Political career
Baz Gul Afridi contested the 1997 elections as a candidate for Member of National Assembly and won as an independent candidate. He served as the MNA for NA-34 FATA until 1999. Since 1999, he has not being directly involved in politics but remained a key figure in the region.
Baz Gul is contesting a seat for National Assembly in the upcoming 2013 General Election for the NA-47 region. Elections are due to take place later this year on May 11, 2013.
