Indonesia–Sri Lanka relations refers to the bilateral relations of Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Indonesia and Sri Lanka are partners in some multilateral organizations, such as World Trade Organization and both are the founder of the Non-Aligned Movement. Since the diplomatic relations were established in 1952,, Indonesia has an embassy in Colombo, while Sri Lanka has an embassy in Jakarta.
History
The relationship between two nations went beyond contemporary history. The Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms of ancient Indonesia and Sri Lanka has established contacts since 9th century CE, during the era of Srivijaya empire. During that times Buddhism are shared as the main religion of both nations. According to Sri Lankan source, an Indonesian king had visited Sri Lanka many years ago, bringing a baby elephant as a gift, thus explaining similar genetics between Sumatran elephant and Sri Lankan elephant.
The history of both nations were also intertwined during 17th to 18th-century, as both nations were fell under control of Dutch East India Company (VOC). Sri Lanka was part of VOC during Dutch period in Ceylon 1656–1796, while started in 17th-century Indonesia fell under Dutch Empire as headquarter of VOC and later as its colony, the Dutch East Indies well until World War II. During this times, several Javanese Mataram kings, princes and fighters that defiance to the Dutch rules on the archipelago were exiled to Sri Lanka by the Dutch.
Indonesia and Sri Lanka officially established diplomatic relations in 2 August 1952. Since 1962 the status of Indonesian Consulate office in Colombo has been upgraded as an Embassy, that also served as Indonesian representative office for Maldives since 2 September 1975.
Economy and trade
The Sri Lanka-Indonesia Business Council established on August 30, 1991, with the main objective of promoting trade, investment, services and tourism between Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
Since 2012 both nations had agree on enhancing bilateral cooperation in a number of sectors, spanning from defence, trade, investments, tourism, culture, agriculture and aquaculture. In consideration of the importance of connectivity to harness cultural ties and in strengthening co-operation in the tourism sector, Indonesia agreed to Sri Lanka’s request to commence early negotiations to increase flight frequencies to that country.
